Musikk

  • Arco Kulturskole5–18 years

    Kulturskole ¡ Slemdalsveien 131

    A family-oriented music school at Slemdal with personal one-to-one tuition for children, youth and adults. The core offering is piano, guitar, singing and music production, and they also teach bass guitar, ukulele, violin, viola, cello, saxophone and clarinet. Which of the latter run depends on teacher availability, so ask about the instrument your child wants. Lessons are short for the youngest.

    A school choir for pupils from years 2 to 7 at Bogstad, where everyone in those years is welcome to join. There is no audition. Alongside the choir, Bogstad and Voksen share a school brass band with almost 100 players.

  • Gjallarhorn (Steinerskolens musikkorps)8–18 years

    The school band of the Rudolf Steiner school in Oslo, founded in October 1960, with over fifty members across a beginners' band, a junior band and the main band. Players start between ages 8 and 10 and can stay until they turn 18, receiving both individual instrument tuition and weekly joint rehearsals. The band plays regularly at the school's seasonal events. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

    A school choir with deep roots: Huseby school's girls' choir was set up as early as 1948, and today's choir was founded in the autumn of 1982 as an elective for sixth-graders. Interest was such that membership grew from 17 to 50 within a few months, as fourth- and fifth-graders wanted to join too. The choir has its own website and board, and is a member of Ung i Kor Oslo.

    Free choir for school years 3 to 7 at the Ris parish house, Thursdays from 18:00 to 19:30. Alongside singing the choir does dance, drama and play. The choir is part of the YWCA-YMCA.

  • Skøyen Skolekor6–13 years

    Kor ¡ Skøyen skole

    A children's choir with well over a hundred members across all seven year groups. Founded in the winter of 2004, it rehearses in the assembly hall at Skøyen school every Monday, with the first rehearsal in the second week after term starts in August and January. Members join in year 1 and can stay through year 7. The school sits just behind the wheel of life in Frogner Park.

    A school choir with around seventy pupils from years 1 to 7, split into three: an aspirant choir for first-graders, a junior choir for years 2 and 3, and a main choir from year 4 to 7. A member of Ung i Kor Oslo.

    A girls' choir with singers from Rudolf Steiner school at Hovseter, a member of Ung i Kor Oslo. Groups ranging from beginners to the youth choir.

  • Steinerskolens strykeorkester6–18 years

    Orkester ¡ Rudolf Steinerskolen i Oslo, Flyveien 2

    The string orchestra at the Rudolf Steiner school at Hovseter, divided into Ministryk, Lillestryk and Storestryk plus a chamber group. Ministryk is for the newest beginners, working on playing position, rhythm games, note reading and listening to one another before moving on. All the groups have a fixed rehearsal day on Mondays, and the youngest rehearse within after-school hours. Which group a pupil joins is decided by the teacher and conductor from a mix of level and age.

    A parent-run string orchestra for children and young people, working with Oslo kulturskole. Pupils get individual tuition on violin, viola, cello or double bass at several of the primary schools in Vestre Aker, plus a weekly orchestra rehearsal in a group matched to level and age. The orchestra is split into Vestre Aker Gresshopper, Lillestryk, Storestryk, Kammerkameratene and Kammerorkester, and the joint rehearsals are at Slemdal school on Thursdays. The oldest players carry on until they are nineteen.

    Vinderen children's choir was set up as a school choir in 1977 by the couple Else-Marit and Joar Rørmark, who led it until the late 1990s. In 2008 the choir was restarted with a new profile and the name Vinderenkoret. A member of Ung i Kor Oslo.

    The school band for Voksen and Bogstad schools, which has won the Norwegian school band championship two years running. Children start as aspirants from third grade and up, and get both an instrument and a uniform on loan, plus a dedicated instructor for their instrument. Children play in the band from the first year, and the 17 May parade is the highlight.

    The school choir at Voksen school, a member of Ung i Kor Oslo, open to everyone who likes to sing. The school shares a brass band with Bogstad, which has more than 140 players aged 8 to 18.

    Children's football from age six at the large multi-sport club Heming at Slemdal, with nearly 6,000 members across eight sports. No league tables are kept before age thirteen, and playing time is shared evenly.

  • PersbrĂĽten Basketballklubb6–18 years

    One of the oldest basketball clubs in Oslo and Akershus, founded on 28 April 1967, with its home court in PersbrĂĽtenhallen at PersbrĂĽten upper secondary school. Hovseterhallen was the home court until 2011, and the club still uses the old Pershallen and Holmen skole for training. Most mini and junior players attend the schools nearby (Hovseter, Huseby, Voksen and the Steiner school), so the team often becomes an extension of the school crowd.

    The bandy section at Ready, with separate teams for children and teenagers split into girls' and boys' sides. The club runs Ready Jentecup, which it describes as the world's largest bandy cup for girls, plus its own tournament in January. Ready has senior bandy teams too, so there is somewhere to go next. The club has a dedicated page for families who find the fees difficult. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

    The football section of Ready, based at Gressbanen in Holmen. The club itself defines children's football as the programme for children aged 8 to 12, and the teams train once a week with parent coaches supported by a paid age-group coordinator. From age eight the teams play in the Oslo Football Association league.

    Children's football at Røa, in an alliance sports club founded on 11 November 1900 that also runs children's and all-round sport, bandy, athletics, cross-country skiing, cycling and keep-fit. Røa additionally has its own adapted football programme, and the women's team Dynamite Girls has played in the top flight since 2000. Equal playing time and no tables up to age twelve.

    NjĂĽrd is based at NjĂĽrdhallen by Makrellbekken and has handball for children and youth. The club has everything from ball play for the youngest to competitive teams.

  • Vestre Akers Skiklub Fotball7–17 years

    Fotball ¡ Voksen

    A broad football offering in one of the clubs with the most children's teams in western Oslo. The football association's club data shows teams in every single birth year from age seven up to seventeen, for both girls and boys, with several teams per year group in the younger ages. Note that the club's own football page does not list training times or fees: for those you need to contact the club, which has its own football director. The facilities are at Voksen with artificial grass and a gravel pitch, and VASK is a broad-based club from 1907 that also offers cross-country skiing, floorball, volleyball, badminton, all-round sports and orienteering.

  • Vestre Akers Skiklub Innebandy10–15 years

    Floorball at Voksen flerbrukshall in two groups. The mixed group for ages 10 to 12 is for both girls and boys and trains on Tuesdays from 16:30 to 17:30. It is the beginners' group: no training fee for the time being, only club membership, and the first session is a free trial.

    The alpine group at Heming has ski school and training groups for children and youth from around age five. The club is based at Slemdal with a short trip to the slopes in Oslo's winter park, welcoming both those who ski for fun and those who want to commit.

    Langrenn ¡ Slemdal

    The cross-country skiing group at Heming has ski school for children and youth from around age six and a short trip to the trails in Nordmarka from Slemdal.

  • Ready Alpint6–18 years

    Alpint ¡ Gressbanen

    The alpine skiing section at Ready, with training groups for children and teenagers organised around how much each skier wants to commit rather than a single shared level. The club has its own ParaAlpint programme. Ready also runs a ski market for second-hand equipment and publishes a sizing guide for anyone buying alpine gear for a child for the first time. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

    The cross-country skiing section of Røa IL, a grassroots club with over a hundred years of history and a large programme for children and young people. The club states explicitly that its activities are meant to be open regardless of level, background or ability. Note that Røa is an alliance club, so each sport is its own club with its own fees.

    NjĂĽrd has an alpine skiing group that takes children and youth to the slopes, with ski school for the youngest from around age five.

  • Ullr Skiklubb5–18 years

    Langrenn ¡ Oslo Vinterpark

    A small ski club for children and young people training once a week at Oslo Vinterpark, where the point is to have fun on skis together. The club does not train for competitions and has no performance pressure, and calls itself a refuge. There is also trampoline training in the autumn and trips to the mountains. In 2023 children from 49 different schools in Oslo and the surrounding area took part.

    Cross-country skiing for primary school age children, with its own group for each birth year, in a club that began as a pure ski club in 1907. Which birth years apply this season is listed on the club's own season page.

Allidrett

  • IL Try Allidrett6–12 years

    Allidrett ¡ Holmenkollen

    All-round sports at the neighbourhood club TRY, with dedicated groups from first grade. The programme is basic training in the gym at Grindbakken school in autumn and spring, ski play on cross-country skis in winter and ski jumping in the smallest hill at Midtstulia, using local facilities and the surrounding nature, with deliberately low membership and training fees. Football and alpine skiing are also on offer at the club, but with separate sign-up.

    All-round sports at Bygdø Monolitten IL, which also covers football, handball and floorball. Although the club takes its name from Bygdøy, the all-round groups meet in the gyms at Skøyen and Majorstuen schools.

    A broad sports club founded in 1924, with several sports under one roof at NjĂĽrdhallen. It has its own groups for children.

  • Røa IL Barnegym og Allidrett3–12 years

    Røa Allianseidrettslag runs Barnegym in Røahallen for boys and girls aged three to five. Once the children start school they move on to all-round sports, where they try the disciplines the club covers, including bandy, football, athletics, cross-country skiing and cycling.

    All-round sports at Sørkedalens Idrettsforening, founded in 1886 as Sørkedalen Ski Club. The club has grown from a pure ski club into a multi-sport club, with its own all-round group for the youngest. It is based in the far north-west of the city, with the forest as its nearest neighbour.

    All-round sports in a club that has football, volleyball, cross-country skiing, badminton, floorball and orienteering. The children try several of the sports through the year.

Speider/fisking/friluft

  • BLIA speidergruppe6–18 years

    Speider ¡ Smestad

    A Buddhist scout group, set up in 2017 and affiliated with the Norwegian Scout Association through Oslospeiderne. BLIA stands for Buddha's Light International Association, and the group is founded on humanistic Buddhism with joy, harmony, equality and inclusion as stated values. Meetings are every other Sunday from 3 to 5pm, based at Smestad, and you do not have to be a Buddhist to join. Otherwise the scouting follows the usual programme of trips and outdoor life.

    A scout group at Vettakollen in Vestre Aker, part of Oslospeiderne. Nordmarka begins just above the meeting place. The group has sections by age, so you can start at six and stay through lower secondary.

    The orienteering group in the multi-sport club Heming has a programme for children and youth right by the woods at Slemdal.

    KFUK-KFUM scouts meeting at Ris parish house. Scouts are divided into oppdagere, stifinnere and vandrere by year group, and the scarf changes colour at each step.

  • Røa KFUK-KFUM-speidere6–18 years

    KFUK-KFUM scouts meeting at Røa church. The youngest are called oppdagere and spend their time on play and discovery trips locally; from year 3 they become stifinnere, and from year 5 vandrere, where cooperation and eventually leadership training take up more room.

    A scout group at Huseby, part of Oslospeiderne. Weekly meetings for the children through the school year, a trip roughly every month and a week at summer camp. The group meets at the ÂŤEnglandÂť croft by Huseby and has its own cabin at Brunkollen in BĂŚrum.

Turn, friidrett og parkour

    A rhythmic gymnastics club, with recreational groups at NjĂĽrdhallen from age five: levels for ages 5 to 7, 8 to 10, an advanced group, RG for everyone up to 13 and a dedicated youth group to 17. Rhythmic gymnastics combines dance, gymnastics and apparatus like ball, ribbon and rope, and the club has gymnasts at every level from beginner to the competitive classes.

  • NjĂĽrd Turn3–16 years

    The gymnastics section of NjĂĽrd, in NjĂĽrdhallen at Makrellbekken. Playful gymnastics is split into ages three to four and five to six, the gymnastics school into years one and two, three and four, and five to seven, and from year eight there is a separate group for teenagers. The club also has para gymnastics for both children and youth. The youngest are in the gym hall while the older ones train in the main hall.

    Oslo Movement's classes for children and youth in NjĂĽrdhallen run on Sundays: Parkour Kidz for ages six to nine, Parkour & Flips level 1 for nine to twelve and level 2-3 for twelve to fifteen. The classes are grouped by both age and level, so you start where you are and move up when it clicks. Courses follow the school term, with sign-up before the start.

    The athletics section at Ready, split in two that train in different places. Children aged 6 to 12 train on Tuesdays at Friplassen in Hovseterdalen. Teenagers from 13 train on Mondays and Fridays at Bislett stadium, so in the city centre rather than the neighbourhood. Charged per term, and the club follows the school calendar. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

    Fritidsklubb ¡ Stoppestedet ungdomshus

    The junior programme at Stoppestedet youth house, for those too young for the regular youth club. While the main house welcomes teenagers from 13 to 19, Junior’n is for the middle grades, with games, activities and adults present. Free, like the rest of the city's youth clubs.

    Free girls' group for year 8 students, Wednesdays from 17:00 to 19:00. A fixed group of 10 to 12 girls meets weekly with four volunteer group leaders, aiming to build confidence through conversations and activities, with no pressure to perform.

    Fritidsklubb ¡ Ris menighetshus

    Free club for school years 5 to 7 at the Ris parish house, Fridays from 14:30 to 16:30, right after school. The weekend kicks off with crafts, cooking, games and time to hang out with old and new friends. The club is part of the YWCA-YMCA.

  • Ungdomshuset B79–18 years

    Fritidsklubb ¡ Hovseterveien 74

    The B7 youth house at Hovseter in Vestre Aker, a meeting place for children and young people aged 9 to 19 with a recording studio, band rehearsal room, podcast room, gaming room, hobby room, pool and table tennis. The house has moved into new premises at Hovseterveien 74, on the lower floor facing the road by the roundabout before the bridge. Juniors have Mondays, lower secondary Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and upper secondary Thursdays. Free and drop-in.

    The tennis section of IL Heming for children and young people, in a multi-sport club with around 5,900 members. The facility at Slemdal has tennis courts, sports halls, artificial pitches, a trampoline hall and a gym all in one place. The club has 55 permanent coaches and over 300 paid by the hour. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

    NjĂĽrd has tennis courts by Makrellbekken, and dedicated courses for children from age five. Children start with softer balls and short rackets.

    Badminton for beginners at Jarbakken, with separate groups for ages 6 to 11 (Mondays and/or Wednesdays 16:00 to 17:00) and 12 to 17 (Mondays 17:00 to 18:30 and/or Wednesdays 17:00 to 18:00). Vestre Akers Skiklub is a multi-sport club, so all-round sports and more are close at hand in the same club.

Dans og teater

    Dans ¡ Samfunnshus Vest

    A dance school and club at Røa, with a clear ladder through the childhood years. The youngest start in Ministjerner from three to five, school-age children move on to the beginners' class and from there up through the levels in freestyle and slow.

  • Oslo Sportsdansklubb, NjĂĽrdhallen9–18 years

    Dans ¡ Njürdhallen

    The club's competition and elite group for children and young people trains here, in addition to Disen school where the club holds children's dance, the foundation course and the recruit group. The group is for those who have been through the foundation course and the recruit level, and the club follows the Norwegian Dance Federation's level ladder: the work here is on free choreography and technique in eight of the ten ballroom dances, solo or as a couple. The other groups at NjĂĽrdhallen are adult groups, so this is the one that belongs in a listing for children. Note that the lower age of nine is our estimate, derived from the children's foundation course running to nine and coming before this group; the club states no age itself, so check with them.

    A dance studio at Vinderen, founded in 1986. Children and teenagers can choose between children's dance, classical ballet, jazz, hip hop, funk, ragga fusion, contemporary, commercial and girly style, from one to five times a week and at levels for both beginners and more experienced dancers. All students take part in the big summer show and Christmas show every year.

    A judo club founded in 1992, with three groups from children to adults, in the gym at Svendstuen school. Judo is a throwing sport where you learn to fall safely before you learn to throw, and the club welcomes beginners as well as the more experienced.

    NjĂĽrd has its own fencing group in NjĂĽrdhallen, welcoming new fencers from around age seven. Children learn technique and tactics.

    Fencing for children and young people at Hovseterhallen. The club lends out equipment to beginners, so you can try it without buying anything first.

Paraidrett

  • Heming Parasport6–18 years

    Paraidrett ¡ Sørkedalsveien 152

    Adapted sports at Heming Idrettslag for children and young people with intellectual and other cognitive disabilities, with all-round sports, dance, cross-country skiing and alpine skiing. The groups are split into junior and senior, and off-season and cross-country training runs year-round. Heming is based at Slemdal, with the forest and ski slopes right outside.

    Gymnastics group adapted for children and youth with intellectual disabilities, at NjĂĽrdhallen on Makrellbekken. NjĂĽrd offers para gymnastics both within the children's programme (ages 3 to 13) and for youth from 14, with training adapted to each gymnast.

  • Røa Unified (Røa IL)6–18 years

    Adapted football at Røa IL for players with disabilities. Røa Unified has long been an offering for youth and adults, and the club now also runs Røa Unified Kids for children and teenagers, training Thursdays at Røa (indoors in winter, outdoors in summer). Contact the club via its page for start-up details and times for the children's group.

Ridning

  • Langlielva Rideklubb6–18 years

    Ridning ¡ Nordmarka Rideskole

    The riding club attached to Nordmarka Rideskole, and a different thing from the riding school itself. The point of the club is that a rider can borrow the school's horses and enter competitions without owning one, which otherwise puts competitive riding out of reach for most children. The club also helps train the school horses. If a child simply wants to learn to ride, the riding school is the place; if they want to compete, it is the club. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

    A small riding school in Sørkedalen with the Nordmarka riding trails right outside the stable door. Lessons run Monday to Saturday with at most six pupils per group, so everyone gets close attention, and they teach all levels. On the children's groups everyone must bring their own handler for the whole term, and the instructor decides when a child can try on their own. The school also runs day riding camps in the summer holidays for children from age eight.

    Modellfly ¡ Bogstad

    A model aircraft club for Oslo and the surrounding area, with members from nine years old and up. Model flying combines building, electronics and flying, and children and adults do the same thing side by side. The club flies mostly from the open ground a short way north of Bogstad manor, and on the ice in winter, and experienced members help beginners get started.
