A basketball club in the Groruddalen valley with its home court in Apalløkka sports hall. The club has teams for children and youth in all age groups, runs its own basketball camps and has a new outdoor court at Grorud, so you can play indoors in winter and outside in summer.

Håndball · Apalløkka idrettshall

Handball club at Apalløkka sports hall in Ammerud, with teams for children aged six to twelve. Members come from Grorud, Rødtvet, Nordtvet and Ammerud, so you do not have to live in Ammerud to join. Beginners are welcome throughout the season and no previous handball experience is needed.

The district's large sports club, founded in 1918, with sections for football, handball and tennis. Football is the biggest, with teams in all children's and youth classes and a home ground at Grorud sports facility.

Håndball · Grorud flerbrukshus

Handball for the youngest in the district's large sports club, founded in 1918. Weekly training for six-, seven- and eight-year-olds, boys and girls together, at Grorud flerbrukshus. Through the season the group takes part in Loppetassen, the handball federation's tournaments for the youngest, where no league table is kept. You can try a couple of times before joining the club. Grorud Idrettslag also has football and tennis, so trying something else alongside is easy.

The football section of Romsås sports club, with teams in the children's and youth classes and a base at Romsås. The club was founded in 1972, has over 650 members and several of its offerings are free.

Håndball · Romsåshallen

Handball at Romsåshallen, where all of the club's training takes place. The club's own group overview splits the children into a handball school for ages 5 to 9 and a junior group for 10 to 15, while its training schedule lists a handball school for girls aged 6 to 10 and a team for girls born 2012 to 2014, so check with the club which groups actually run now and whether there is one for boys. Romsås sports club was founded in 1972. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Children's football at Ammerud with Sportsforeningen Grei, founded on 1 April 1919. The club was originally called A.S.K. after the initials of Ammerudskogen, Apalløkka, Sandås and Kalbakken, and took the name Grei when it was renamed in June 1920. Today it has around a thousand members, eight hundred of them in football, recruiting mainly from Ammerud, Rødtvet and Kalbakken. Equal playing time and no tables up to age twelve.

Innebandy · Apalløkkahallen

Floorball at Sportsforeningen Grei, with a mini mini group for the youngest and separate teams for girls and boys from years one to seven, plus boys' teams for the 2010 to 2013 cohorts. The home court is Apalløkkahallen at Ammerud, and the club also uses the gyms at Ammerud and Grorud schools.

Korps · Grorud skole

A school band based at Grorud school. The band takes children from Grorud school, Nordtvet school and the schools at Romsås, so it is not only for the pupils of one school. Aspirants are admitted from the lower grades, instruments are borrowed from the band, and tuition happens within the band itself.

Orkester · Ammerud skole

String orchestra for children and young people in Groruddalen, teaching violin, viola and cello. Over 75 members across three orchestras plus a folk music group, so there is a place both for complete beginners and for those who have played a while. Ensemble rehearsals at Ammerud school on Wednesdays.

Korps · Rødtvet skole

A school band with a big band line-up rather than the usual wind band, and the concert version is called Rødtvet Storband. Members are aged 9 to 18, and the band has been going since 1965. Rehearsals are at Rødtvet school.

Kor · Rødtvet skole

The singing choir for pupils at Rødtvet school in Grorud, a member of Ung i Kor Oslo.

A youth club in Ammerudhellinga, open to children and young people across the full span from ten to eighteen. Free and drop-in.

Fritidsklubb · Gårdsveien 2

A music workshop for young people at Fyrhuset, with rehearsal rooms and equipment to play, practise and create. It is free and drop-in, and set up so you can come alone and find others to play with, not only turn up with a ready-made band. Open Monday to Friday 3-9pm all year apart from the summer and Christmas holidays, for ages 10 to 20. Note that you have to live or go to school in the Grorud district to take part.

A youth club with more than fifty years behind it in Gårdsveien at Kalbakken. Club nights run twice a week, Tuesday for juniors (school years 5 to 7) and Thursday for teenagers (year 8 up to eighteen), and entry, membership and the café are all free. You have to live or go to school in the Grorud district to take part.

Taekwondo · Kalbakken

A taekwondo club with its own dojang at Kalbakken, right below Kalbakken youth club, and training sessions also in the gym at Nordtvet school. The club has dedicated children's groups with belt gradings: beginners and more advanced from five to nine, a separate group for ten to thirteen, and a youth group from fourteen and up. Children train kicks, technique and self-discipline.

A boxing club in Groruddalen taking children and teenagers at all levels alongside adults. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Bryting · Kalbakken

A wrestling club with its own premises at Kalbakken and members in the children's, youth and junior classes, both girls and boys. Wrestling trains strength, balance, agility and technique together with a partner, and the equipment is essentially just training clothes.

Friluft · Romsås

Free outdoor group for children at Romsås, every Tuesday from 17:00 to 19:00. Barnas Røde Kors (BARK) is the Red Cross' activity programme for primary school children, with play and outdoor life in the neighbourhood together with adult volunteers. No membership fee and no equipment requirements. You get the local meeting point when you sign up via the link.

Orientering · Lill-o-stua

An orienteering club with Lillomarka as its home ground. The recruit group is for children aged five to twelve and trains from April to October, with courses in the forest at several levels, including for those who have never seen a map. Map reading is taught through play rather than theory.

Speider · Grorud

A scout group at Romsås in Grorud, part of Oslospeiderne. The group takes children from year 3, in the flokk, and the troop runs from year 5 to year 10.

A sports club at Rødtvet for children and young people, offering football, athletics and badminton. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Romsås sports club has all-round sports, handball and a dance school for children in the district, and offers free trial sessions in all-round sports and dance. The club was founded in 1972 and has over 650 members, with sections for football, handball, gymnastics, dance, aerobics, cycling and skiing.

Langrenn · Lillomarka arena

Cross-country skiing club with training groups all the way from first grade to junior level, split by school year: Arenagruppa for years 1 and 2, Lillosetergruppa for 3 and 4, Sinobergruppa for 5 to 7, and HL-gruppa for the oldest. Children starting school are welcome from January of the year they begin, and the training fee is waived for first-graders. The oldest can also train with Team GLA, a joint effort between the clubs in Groruddalen.

Skiskyting · Huken skianlegg, Romsås

A biathlon club with a biathlon school for children from eight. Biathlon combines cross-country skiing with target shooting, and the club lends out both skis and rifles, so no equipment of your own is needed to try.

Svømming · Nordtvet bad

Swimming courses for children at Nordtvet bad in Kalbakken, run by Sportsklubben Speed. The club follows the Norwegian Swimming School system, with courses from the youngest accompanied by an adult in a warm-water pool and upwards through the levels. Speed also runs courses at Økern, Linderud, Romsås and Furuset pools. Note that Nordtvet bad is a sports pool Speed operates for the city, and is not open for general public swimming.

Swimming courses for children aged nine to fourteen at Romsås bad, run by Sportsklubben Speed. This is the only one of Speed's five pools that takes the older children. The others run to age eight, so for a child who did not learn to swim early, this is the place in this part of the city.

Dans · Raven klubben

The dance group at Romsås sports club, started in the autumn of 2022, with modern hip hop as its genre. For the youngest ages the point is children's dance and play, and the instructors have taken courses in teaching dance to small children; the older ones get choreography meant to push them a little past what they already know. The training fee covers the 6 to 14 age group. The group takes part in a free dance school in the autumn, dance shows at the local schools and at the gymnastics end-of-term show. Training is on Mondays at Raven klubben in Ravnkollbakken, the youngest from 17:00 to 17:45 and the older ones from 18:00 to 19:00. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Koding · Nordtvet bibliotek, Nordtvetveien 28

A free coding club at Nordtvet library for pupils in years 4 to 6, on Wednesdays 5-7pm. Here micro:bit boards are programmed into robots that do things, and no prior experience is needed. The club is run by volunteers from Lær Kidsa Koding. Bring your own laptop or iPad if you have one, and parents are welcome to join in and help.

Tennis · Grorud idrettsanlegg

Tennis courses for children at Grorud, split into years one to four and years five to seven. The courses run in spring and summer: in 2026 eight Wednesdays and eight drop-in Saturdays from May to June. Drop-in suits those who would rather try without committing. Sjakk · Rødtvet skole

A chess club for children and young people training at Rødtvet school, drawing members from Rødtvet, Nordtvet and Ammerud. The club runs the Groruddalen school chess championship and has also hosted the Oslo championship for school teams.
