    A music institute with its own music school for children at Fagerborg. Beginners aged 5 to 9 get individual tuition and ensemble playing on violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano, oboe and bassoon. Those who want to go further can apply to Unge Talenter, the institute's programme for school-age musicians.

    A boys' choir rehearsing in Fagerborg church, once or twice a week depending on voice group and age. It takes boys from year 2 upwards, also after their voice breaks, and new singers join all year with no prior experience. The choir takes part in the Norsk Tipping grassroots scheme, which is used to keep the membership fee low, buy sheet music and let more boys join the choir trips.

    A parent-run recorder orchestra of between 60 and 70 pupils aged 7 to 25, at St. Sunniva school since 1989. A narrow and unusual offering: the recorder as ensemble playing rather than something done alone in a music lesson. Oslo's municipal arts school organises and is responsible for the instrument teaching, which takes place both in groups and individual lessons, with ensemble playing across levels. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

    A girls' choir started in 2004 by Linn Andrea Fuglseth, with around 120 girls from years 1 to 7 from Bolteløkka school and the schools around it. The choir marked twenty years in 2024, rehearses weekly at the school and has released three albums on Grappa: folk music, Christmas songs and Oslo songs. The repertoire ranges from folk music and jazz to newly written and classical works.

    A joint school band for the two schools on either side of St. Hanshaugen park, with 85 children and young people from age 9 upwards.

    A family orchestra at Ila school where children, young people and parents play together. Ila Strykeband rehearses on Mondays 6.15-7.45pm, with a built-in break and something good to eat. Members can read music but play a lot together by ear, and the repertoire is deliberately varied to introduce different genres. The conductors are cellist Øyvind Engen and pianist Trygve Brøske.

    A children's and youth choir rehearsing in the main hall at Fagerborg lower secondary school on Wednesdays from 5pm, where the children's and youth choirs start together. The children's choir takes members from year 3 and the youth choir from year 7, so singers can stay through their whole schooling. The choir is a member of Ung i Kor Oslo, has its own conductor and welcomes new singers of any level. You can join a rehearsal first to see whether it suits you.

    A children's choir at the Swedish Margaret Church at Hammersborg, a member of Ung i Kor Oslo. Weekly rehearsals with singing in Swedish and Norwegian for children.

  • Marienlyst og Ullevål skoleorkester (MUSO)6–18 years

    A string orchestra for children from age 6, founded in 1955, rehearsing at Marienlyst and Ullevål schools. You do not have to attend either school; the orchestra has members from across the city. Membership includes a weekly individual lesson on violin, cello, viola or double bass, and the instrument is lent by the orchestra rather than bought or rented. There are three ensembles: a beginners' orchestra, a main orchestra and a chamber group. The year includes house concerts, a Christmas concert, Oslo music school's spring concert at the Oslo Concert Hall, and seminars in autumn and spring. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

    A school band for pupils at Marienlyst school, founded in 1952, with more than eighty members across a main band, a junior band and an aspirant band. The structure means children play alongside peers at their own level all the way up, and the very youngest can start as early as six.

    String orchestra for children and young people, with five levels from preaspirant to chamber orchestra. Every pupil plays in an orchestra, and all of them can also take individual lessons with a teacher. No prior experience is needed, the first instrument is lent out free of charge, and new pupils get one free trial lesson before deciding.

    The children's choir at St. Olav Catholic cathedral, for children from grades 3 to 7, rehearsing in the parish hall on Tuesdays from 16:00 to 17:00. The choir sings at Mass and has a repertoire rooted in the Catholic church music tradition.

    A free meeting place for primary-school-age children, run by Red Cross volunteers. Each group meets at a fixed venue once a week, from 5pm to 7pm, for a couple of hours, doing everything from forest walks and campfires to baking, board games, drawing, bowling, climbing and cinema trips. The Oslo groups are based at Romsås library, Gamlebyen school, Torshovdalen activity house, Gulestua in Tante Ulrikkes vei, Sletteløkka community house, Sinsen school, Bjørndal school and Sagene school. Registration is by email to Oslo Red Cross or through the form on their website.

    A youth club in Akersveien at Hammersborg, for children in years 5 to 7 who live or go to school in the St. Hanshaugen district. It sits in the middle of the city centre. The after-school offering runs Monday to Thursday, with a junior club on Thursday evenings and a separate year 7 club on Fridays that prepares the move up to the youth centre at Huset på Haugen. Free, but places are allocated one school year at a time, so registration is required. The club closes during school holidays but runs separate holiday activities.

    Free after-school club for school years 5 to 7, Wednesdays from 14:00 to 16:30 at Lovisenberggata 4, run by the St. Hanshaugen parish. Hang out with friends or make new ones, chat, play games and join various activities. No registration needed, just come. Follows the school year.

    Karate at St. Sunniva school, where children and adults train together and everyone over ten is welcome. Training times checked 24.10.2026: Mondays and Thursdays from 17:00 to 18:00, one joint session for everyone.

    Taekwondo and self-defence centrally by Bislett, with dedicated children's groups and plenty of space in the dojang. Beginner groups for children take pupils from age seven, the youth group runs from twelve and the adult group from sixteen. Children train both patterns and sparring and grade up through the belt system, and those who want to compete can join the club's training camps from age thirteen.

    Norway's oldest athletics club, founded in 1890, with Bislett stadium as its home ground. For children the way in is running, jumping and throwing in playful form at Bislett.

    The athletics section is the largest in IL i BUL, with around 350 active athletes. Every summer the club runs an athletics school for children aged 6 to 13 at Bislett stadium, where participants try all the classic events under guidance. Through the rest of the year there are regular training groups for children and youth, and the club takes children from the age of five.

    Norwegian Church Aid's youth organisation, working against the causes of poverty and injustice: debt policy, climate justice, arms trade and global health. Members (aged 13-30) meet in local groups, build campaigns and learn practical advocacy.

    Children's and family group in Framfylkingen, the Norwegian trade union confederation's family organisation. The group meets about once a month for activities like theatre, outings and community engagement, for children of all ages together with their families. Annual membership costs 50 kroner.

Speider/fisking/friluft

    Children's own environmental organisation, with more than 10,000 members and around sixty local groups across the country. The Oslo groups usually meet a couple of times a month for litter picking, forest trips, swap markets, bike workshops and Christmas workshops. Miljøagentene is the children's arm of Naturvernforbundet, and a family membership in Naturvernforbundet i Oslo og Akershus includes membership for the children. From around age fourteen the path continues to Natur og Ungdom.

    KFUK-KFUM scouts meeting at Markus parish house in St. Hanshaugen. From year 1 you are an oppdager, from year 3 a stifinner and from year 5 a vandrer, right through to year 10.

    The sports section of Bondeungdomslaget in Oslo, founded in 1913, today first and foremost an athletics club, with training for children from the age of five and long traditions also in cross-country skiing, ski jumping and orienteering. The club is based centrally by Bislett and runs its own adapted programme, BVT.

    Drawing courses at Marienlyst at two levels, one for eight to ten and one for ten to twelve. One hour a week over 35 weeks. The younger group learns perspective, anatomy and light and shade; the older moves on to portraits, life sketching and still life. Charcoal, ink, pastel and watercolour in both.

Paraidrett

    An interdisciplinary cultural institute and non-profit working for children and young people with disabilities. Its programmes include Paraleker and Mini Abloom, holiday activities in Oslo open to everyone, and Rideglede for alle, a riding programme. Abloom also runs its own film festival and awards the Abloom prize, with a children's jury helping to decide. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.
