Intility Arena, Gamle Oslo

Children's football from age six with separate teams for each year group, for girls and boys alike, at one of the city's biggest clubs. As in all Norwegian children's football there is equal playing time and no league tables up to age twelve. The home ground is Intility Arena by Helsfyr.

A neighbourhood club in the middle of Grünerløkka with children's football from age six at Dælenenga, where a new multi-purpose hall has opened. The club also runs UEFA Play Makers, a dedicated introductory programme for the youngest girls. A short trip for many inner-city families.

KFUM Arena, Nordstrand

A large community club at Ekeberg with children's football at all levels from age six, based at the grounds around KFUM Arena. The club takes in many year groups and usually fields both girls' and boys' teams in each.

Children's football from age six for children in Trasop, Godlia, Oppsal, Hellerud and Østensjø, with teams in every year group. The club is certified as a quality club by the Norwegian Football Federation and is based in Vetlandsveien by Oppsal Arena.

Football for girls and boys at any level from age six, played at Frogner stadion and Tørteberg. Frigg also runs bandy, so many of the children here play football in summer and bandy in winter.

A broad and inclusive children's football programme in Søndre Nordstrand, with separate girls' and boys' teams in each year group from age six. Holmlia is a multi-sport club, so children can also try basketball, dance, fencing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the same grounds.

Norges idrettshøgskole, Nordre Aker

Swimming all the way from baby classes to club level. Baby courses take children from ten weeks, toddler courses run from two to four with an adult in the water, and the swimming school then follows the national levels of diving, floating, gliding and propulsion. Courses are held at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, Lovisenberg and Bergtunet, and the club also offers synchronised swimming.

A gymnastics club with a broad children's programme in the gyms at Uranienborg school, from playful gymnastics for the youngest to groups for older children. Registration is per group ahead of each term, and those who want to go further can be selected for the club's competition squad.

One of Norway's largest judo clubs, in new premises at Skullerud. Children's groups are split by birth year, with a dedicated group for the youngest from around age four, and beginners are admitted year round. The club emphasises all-round training, respect for your training partner and a good atmosphere, and there is seating by the mat for parents who want to watch.

Brinken 20, Gamle Oslo

Norway's oldest karate club, teaching karate and nanbudo at Galgeberg with dedicated children's groups from age seven. Beginners up to nineteen train free for their entire first term, and new members are accepted through the first six weeks of each term. Children grade through the belt system, with the emphasis on mastery rather than competition.

Taekwondo and self-defence centrally by Bislett, with dedicated children's groups and plenty of space in the dojang. Children train both patterns and sparring and grade up through the belt system, and those who want to compete can join the club's training camps from age thirteen.

A dance studio at Ryen with a clear progression through childhood. Children's dance is for four- and five-year-olds, preparatory ballet and jazz for six- and seven-year-olds, and from age eight you start ballet and jazz level 1 and work up through the levels. Hip-hop and break start at six and follow the same ladder, with modern, commercial and musical theatre further up.

Norway's largest gymnastics club, with the whole ladder gathered at Haslehallen. Playful gymnastics takes the youngest from around age two, the gymnastics levels follow the first school years, and beyond that come parkour, adaptive gymnastics, team and apparatus gymnastics plus dedicated youth groups. The club runs both community and competitive squads.

Community gymnastics at Høyenhallen by Manglerud metro station, with playful gymnastics for four- and five-year-olds and then groups by school year all the way to tenth grade. The exercises follow the national gymnastics ladder of a hundred graded skills, and those who want more can move up to a dedicated advanced group.

Njård's biggest section, with playful gymnastics split into ages three to four and five to six, and a gymnastics school split into years one and two, three and four, and five and six. The school follows the national gymnastics ladder, with the youngest in the gym hall and the older ones in the main hall at Makrellbekken.

Lambertseter bad, Nordstrand

One of Norway's largest swimming schools, with around 2,000 participants a week. Courses are split into toddlers from age two, children from five, and teenagers up to seventeen, following the national federation's levels. Lessons run at Lambertseter, Holmlia and Bøler pools and at Oppsal and Hauketo schools, and those who want more can move on to the club's recruit and competition squads.

Swimming courses in small groups with adult instructors, split into separate tracks for ages four to seven and eight to thirteen. The youngest start with water familiarisation and work through three levels, while the older ones begin on a beginner course and move on to technique. Courses run at Sagene bad and Montebello bad.

A swimming club based at Tøyenbadet, with courses for children and teenagers at every level and a clear route onward to training and competition. The club also runs swimming for nurseries and schools, and together with Lambertseter and Oslo Idrettslag takes part in the free summer swimming funded by the City of Oslo.

A figure-skating club running a skating school at Jordal, in the heart of the district. The youngest (from age 3) get a play-based introduction to skating and figure skating, while older children can progress to basic and advanced groups. A rare niche sport that's easy to try.

One of the country's biggest ice-hockey clubs, with its home rink at Jordal Amfi. The grassroots side involves around 300 children and youth, and a dedicated skating and hockey school welcomes beginners from about age 5 - no prior skating needed. Teams for both girls and boys in every age group.

One of Oslo's largest martial-arts clubs, founded in 1983 and firmly rooted in the Jordal neighbourhood. The children's classes from age 7 emphasise joy, mastery and community, aiming to give children a lifelong interest in taekwondo. A strong youth scene for those who want to take it further.

One of the few clubs in the city offering bandy for children, on the artificial ice rink at Voldsløkka. A volunteer-run contemporary circus school for children and youth at Mortensrud, started in 2022 in partnership with Cirkus Xanti. Children learn aerial acrobatics, juggling, acrobatics and unicycling - a rare, creative niche that builds body control and confidence. It's free and for children aged 5-18 who live in the Søndre Nordstrand district.

Ullern IF has its own cheerleading section, a fast-paced team sport combining acrobatics, dance and gymnastics elements for shows and competition. A club for traditional Japanese aikido, with its own children's group for ages 8-12 in new premises at Husebybakken in Montebello. Children's training focuses on basic motor skills, body control and falling technique (ukemi), taught through play and simple partner exercises. Aikido is a soft, non-competitive martial art where you learn to receive and redirect movement rather than meeting force with force.

An aikido club with its own dojo on Ensjøveien, offering children's aikido for kids aged 6 to 13. For the youngest it is mostly play and simple exercises, gradually adding more age-appropriate technique, with gradings each semester. A capoeira group based at Tøyen Kulturhus, with its own children's class led by a Brazilian instructor with many years of experience. Capoeira is a Brazilian art form that blends martial arts, dance, acrobatics and music, where the children move in a ring (roda) to the rhythm of drums and the berimbau. A fast-paced, musical activity that trains agility, coordination and rhythm.

A table-tennis club based at Bjølsenhallen, with training groups for all ages and levels - from complete beginners to ambitious youth. The club has a head coach at the highest coaching level and emphasises that everyone should have a place, whatever their starting point. Table tennis is a fast, technical indoor sport that suits the whole year round.

A local taekwondo club in the north of Groruddalen, with children's groups from age 6 and training several days a week in the culture hall at Nedre Fossum Gård in Stovner. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art known for its kicks and spring, where children train technique, discipline and confidence and can grade up through the belt system. An affordable, local option in a district with fewer organised niche sports.

Skullerud, Østensjø

One of Norway's largest and most tradition-rich judo clubs, founded in 1984, with modern premises at Skullerud in the east of Oslo. The offering ranges from "knøttejudo" for the very youngest from age four, through age-divided children's groups, to youth who want to pursue competitive judo. Judo is an Olympic martial art where you learn throws, falling technique and self-control, with rolling intake for beginners.

The neighbourhood club at Mortensrud has its own cricket programme for children and youth, in a district where cricket has deep roots in many communities. All sport in the club is free for everyone under 19 - the only cost is a 100-kroner annual membership fee - and Mortensrud sports park is being expanded with dedicated cricket surfaces. Cricket is one of the world's biggest sports, and here children can try it without price being a barrier.
