Korps · Kampen skole

The city's second-oldest school band, founded in 1906 by William Farre. Only Møllergata from 1901 is older. The band has around 90 members across aspirant, junior and main bands, and was awarded the City of Oslo's culture prize in 2017. Aspirants are admitted from year 3, with an instrument on loan and a dedicated instructor.

Kulturskole · Holmlia, Hauketo, Ljan og Bøler

A culture school in music and the arts with weekly teaching, both individual and group lessons, and professional teachers. The year includes ensemble periods, exhibitions and concerts, and pupils also perform outside the school. Note where they actually are: in autumn 2026 they operate at Holmlia, Hauketo, Ljan and Bøler, in the south and east, not at the registered city-centre address. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Kor · Gamle Oslo

KIGO (Culture in Gamle Oslo) runs three children's choirs in the district: Tutti, Allegro and Crescendo, the last based at Gamlebyen school. All are free. No prior experience is needed. KIGO has run cultural activities for children in the district since 2012 and was established as a non-profit in 2015.

The school choir at Lakkegata school in Gamle Oslo, led by conductor Emilie Bjørnstad. You sign up by sending the choir an email. Children need no audition, and there is no deadline to meet. A member of Ung i Kor Oslo.

Kor · Operahuset

The children's choir of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, based at the opera house in Bjørvika, split into one group for ages 6 to 10 and one for 10 to 17. The singers take part in opera productions, give their own choir concerts and perform with the Opera Orchestra. Admission is by audition once a year, announced on the opera's own pages. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Kulturskole · Tøyenbekken 5

The main site of Oslo's municipal school of the arts, the city's resource centre for arts education since 1980. Teaching covers music, dance, theatre, visual art and gaming, with dedicated groups for children and teenagers. The school has around 9,000 pupils across nearly 90 teaching locations in the city, and admission goes through the municipality's shared application portal.

Kor · Grønland kirke

Oslo's own boys' choir rehearsing in Grønland church, a member of Ung i Kor Oslo. The choir has a broad repertoire and admits boys from around age eight. The choir is open to all boys and men who enjoy singing: a high standard is expected of the older choristers, while the youngest learn what they need along the way. With support from the Scheibler foundation the choir can offer reduced or waived membership fees, and a warm meal at every rehearsal.

A children's orchestra rehearsing at Tøyen skole, rooted in the school's music programme in cooperation with Oslo culture school. All pupils from years 2 to 7 get group tuition on an orchestral instrument, and the ensemble playing is split into four levels: rekrutter, aspirant, junior and the main orchestra.

Children's choir for school years 1 to 4 at Vålerenga, with singing, movement and music in many genres. Rehearsals Wednesdays from 17:30 to 18:10, with years 3 and 4 singing until 18:30. The choir is part of the YWCA-YMCA, performs concerts, and the fee is 400 kroner.

School marching band for musicians from Vålerenga school, Brynseng school and other schools in the neighbourhood, rehearsing together on Tuesdays from 17:30 at Vålerenga school, in the Tippen building with the entrance from Fridtjovs gate. Individual lessons are arranged separately. The fee is 2000 kroner per half year, and the band welcomes both beginners and experienced players.

A baseball club with Little League for children from around age six, in addition to softball and senior teams in the top division. In baseball everyone gets to bat and everyone gets to pitch, and the club lends gloves and equipment to new players. The ground is the artificial turf at Valle Hovin, and in winter they train indoors in Skur 13 on Filipstadveien.

Basket · Fyrstikkalleen skole

The basketball club within Vålerenga Idrettsforening, with teams for children and teenagers and senior teams for both women and men. For the 2026/27 season the boys' sides run from under-12 to under-17, while the women play in the second division and the men in the third and fourth. Training takes place in the sports hall at Fyrstikkalleen school at Helsfyr. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Children's football from age six with separate teams for each year group, for girls and boys alike. Up to age twelve there is equal playing time and no league tables. The home ground is Intility Arena by Helsfyr.

Håndball · Jordalhallen

Handball club with teams for every age in Jordalhallen: children's teams from 6 to 12 and youth teams from 13 to 19, plus senior sides. The club's philosophy is that everyone who wants to should get to play handball, and it serves children and youth across Oslo. Ishockey · Jordal Amfi

An ice-hockey club with its home rink at Jordal Amfi. The grassroots side involves around 300 children and youth, and a dedicated skating and hockey school welcomes beginners from about age 5, and you don't need to know how to skate beforehand. Teams for both girls and boys in every age group.

Amerikansk fotball · Jordal idrettspark

Norway's oldest American football club, founded in 1983 as Oslo Trolls, with its home ground on the artificial turf at Jordal. The club has U14 and U17 teams, and the training schedule is split between those and the two senior sides. The way in for children is flag football, the same game without tackling, where a flag is pulled from the belt instead. In summer the club runs introduction weeks together with Oslo idrettskrets, where children can try it out before joining.

Kampsport · Valhall Arena

A martial arts centre at Valhall Arena with three age-based groups for children and teenagers: Små helter for ages 5 to 8, jiu-jitsu for 9 to 11 and a separate group for 12 to 15, plus a girls-only jiu-jitsu class. The centre runs muay thai, MMA, submission wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu across four halls, so a child who starts young can stay on. The timetable is on the front page of their website, and beginners' courses all start together at the beginning of term. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Capoeira · Tøyen Kulturhus

A capoeira group based at Tøyen Kulturhus, with its own children's class led by a Brazilian instructor. Capoeira is a Brazilian art form that blends martial arts, dance, acrobatics and music, where the children move in a ring (roda) to the rhythm of drums and the berimbau.

Boksing · Jordal Amfi

A boxing club with its own hall (the OBK hall) in an annex by Jordal Amfi. The boxing school for children and youth from age ten gives a basic introduction to the fundamentals of boxing, with lots of play and no hard sparring for the youngest.

Kampsport · Brinken 20

A karate club teaching karate and nanbudo at Galgeberg with dedicated children's groups from age seven. Beginners up to nineteen train free for their entire first term, and new members are accepted through the first six weeks of each term. Children grade through the belt system, and competition is not the main focus.

Aikido · Ensjø

An aikido club with its own dojo on Ensjøveien, offering children's aikido for kids aged 6 to 13. For the youngest it is mostly play and simple exercises, gradually adding more age-appropriate technique, with gradings each semester. The club has its own lounge where parents can sit during training, and a trial session is free.

Capoeira · Tøyen Arena

Capoeira for children in two groups, ages 3 to 5 and 6 to 9, on Mondays at Tøyen Arena per the autumn 2026 weekly plan. A Brazilian martial art combining music, acrobatics and dance. Friluft · Gamlebyen

Free outdoor group for children in Gamlebyen, every Tuesday from 17:00 to 18:00. Barnas Røde Kors (BARK) is the Red Cross' activity programme for primary school children, with outdoor play and ball games in the neighbourhood together with adult volunteers. No membership fee. You get the local meeting point when you sign up via the link.

Friluft · Friluftshuset på Sørenga, Sørengkaia 124

DNT's youth programme in Oslo, for everyone between 13 and 25 who joins. Regular, free activities all year round: bouldering in the bouldering room at Friluftshuset on Sørenga every Thursday, and climbing at Oslo Klatresenter in Skullerud every other Tuesday. On top of that come group hikes, winter trips and courses. Where Barnas Turlag takes the youngest up to age twelve, DNT ung is where teenagers carry on, with trips they largely plan and lead themselves.

Friluft · Ensjøveien 20

The district's own outdoor centre since 1995, lending out skis, skates, bikes, canoes, tents and sleeping bags free of charge to all children and young people in Gamle Oslo. FRIGO runs four weekly activity groups (Turgruppa, Kampen Villmarksgruppe, Gamlebyen Friluftsgruppe and Vahl Aktivitetsgruppe) and staffs open meeting points at Rudolf Nilsens plass by Vahl school and in the Jordal skate park, where equipment is lent out on the spot. Everything is free.

Speider · Kampen

17. Oslo Kampianerne, a scout group at Kampen part of Oslospeiderne. Scouting follows the school year, with patrol work where older children lead younger ones. The flokk takes children from year 2, and the troop runs from year 5 to year 10.

Speider · Gamle Oslo

A scout group at Vålerenga in Gamle Oslo, part of Oslospeiderne, with the number 1 in its name. The group runs troop-age activities, that is from 10 to 16, and meetings are held in and around Vålerenga church. Weekly meetings, weekend trips and a summer camp.

Dans · Ensjø

Dance courses for children aged two to twelve in more than twenty dance styles, from children's dance to hip hop. The studio is at Ensjø, and they also run courses at several locations in Oslo and Akershus.

Dans · Operahuset

The National Ballet's own school, offering foundation training in classical ballet from ages 6 to 16. This is not a local beginners' class: pupils are admitted through annual auditions, and the aim is partly to feed talent into the National Ballet and fill children's roles in the company's productions. The final three years are run together with Ruseløkka school in a combined school-and-ballet programme, the only one of its kind in Norway, drawing applicants from across the country. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Sirkus · Hovinveien

A parent-run circus theatre for children and young people aged 8 to 18, started in 2002. The group is open: there is no audition, and anyone who wants to can join as long as there is room. Smulene is split into three age groups, all training for an hour and a half every Monday. Training ranges from aerial and floor acrobatics to theatre exercises, taking in juggling, building pyramids and balancing on large balls. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

A youth café in Aktivitetshuset K1 at Tøyen, an open meeting place where you can hang out, play and meet others after school. Unlike a youth club, you don't have to take part in anything. It is fine to just sit there. Free.

The #Basement youth club at the Salvation Army's Ensjø corps, open to everyone aged thirteen and up, Thursdays from 19:00. A place to hang out, relax and meet others. Every other week there is a bigger activity, from treasure hunts and cooking to short films and video game tournaments, and otherwise board games and table tennis. Taking part is free, and the 50 kroner yearly membership is voluntary.

Koding · Petersborg, Ensjø

A local coding club at Ensjø for all school-age children in the neighbourhood, run by volunteers from Lær Kidsa Koding. The club takes children from years 1 to 7, while many coding clubs start in year 4. The children make games and animations and program small computers. No prior experience needed.

Makerspace · Hagegata 22, Tøyen

The workshop at Biblo Tøyen, the library exclusively for children and young people aged 10 to 15. In the afternoons you can create, draw, cut, glue and test out ideas in the workshop. Everything is free.

Koding · Kolstadgata 1

Free course in programming with LEGO Education SPIKE robot kits, for ages 10 to 14, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 16:00 to 18:00 in Kolstadgata in Gamle Oslo. Participants work in pairs building and programming robots, solving challenges and competing. Both creativity and logic get a workout, and no experience is needed.

Makerspace · Østerdalsgata

An open workshop for children and young people with weekly sessions and courses in design, ceramics, art, glass, production and other makerspace projects. The name stands for Space Left Over After Planning, and the idea is that young people get to pursue their own projects. Participants get access to equipment and guidance. A chess club in Kampen community house with its own youth programme meeting on Tuesday afternoons, gathering children from Kampen, Ensjø, Hasle, Løren and Gamlebyen. The club's motto is 'chess for everyone', and no prior knowledge is needed.

A climbing and bouldering centre at Bryn with dedicated activities for children. The recommended age is from around 8-10. There is no absolute lower limit, but the walls and routes are set for children from roughly fifth grade and up. Bouldering needs neither rope nor a belay partner.

Drop-in badminton for young people from 16, Tuesdays 19:00 to 20:00 at Tøyen Arena, per the autumn 2026 weekly plan. A dedicated parkour hall in Gamlebyen with organised sessions for children and youth from three to sixteen, split into four levels from beginner to advanced. Alongside the courses there is free training for children and a youth jam, where you train in the hall with an instructor present. The facility has a sprung floor, bars and permanent parkour elements, so jumps and landings can be practised all year whatever the weather. Membership can be taken by term or by month.

A process-oriented art school focused on drawing and painting, in Arups gate in Gamlebyen (the school kept its name after nearly twenty years in Nydalen), with dedicated courses for children and youth. In summer there is a dedicated drawing course for teenagers aged 13-17 (after the main holiday period, before school starts), and young people can also join the school's other drawing and painting courses.

Politikk og samfunn · Odalsgata 7

Children's and family group in Framfylkingen, the Norwegian trade union confederation's family organisation, for Gamle Oslo. The group meets about once a month for activities like theatre, outdoor life and community engagement, for children of all ages together with their families. Annual membership costs 50 kroner.

Skateboard · Østerdalsgata

A voluntary children's and youth organisation in Gamle Oslo for those into scootering and fingerboarding, alongside sport, creative workshops and social activities. Activities are led by adults and older teenagers and run all year. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Padling · Nedre Akerselva, Grønland

Free try-out river kayaking on the Akerselva, Saturdays from 13:00 to 15:30 in season. Check the club's page for when the season runs. Certified activity leaders instruct, and kayak, life vest and paddle are lent out for free. No registration, just drop in; small children paddle together with an adult.
