Interactive illusion museum right by Karl Johan, with sensory challenges and optical illusions. The child ticket covers ages 4 to 17 and costs 199 kroner, adults pay 279, and children up to and including three go free. A family ticket for four costs 839 (prices checked 24.10.2026).

Bygning 62, Akershus festning, 0015 Oslo

A military-history museum at Akershus Fortress, with tanks, cannons and uniforms. The museum charges admission: 160 kroner for adults, 80 for children aged 6 to 17 and 400 for a family ticket with two adults and up to four children.

Rosenholmveien 11, 1252 Oslo

Farm and environment centre in Holmlia with horses, sheep, pigs and hens. The activity farm is for children and young people aged 9 to 20, with riding, animal care and a vegetable garden, but the farm is also an open visitor farm with free entry for everyone: come and see the animals, eat your packed lunch at one of the picnic tables or buy a waffle in the storehouse café. Open to visitors on weekdays 8am-7.30pm and weekends 8am-4pm, closed on public holidays. The times were checked on 27 October 2026.

Two free family activities at the Opera House: Lørdagssang (Saturday singing) in the Foyer for children aged 0 to 6, one Saturday a month (just over half an hour, no ticket needed), and Lørdagsdans (Saturday dance) in the Rehearsal Hall for children aged 4 to 6 on selected Saturdays (about 40 minutes, ticket collected in advance). Indoor climbing and bouldering centre by Mathallen at Vulkan, run by Kolsås Klatreklubb, with three climbing walls and 26 top-rope stations. Centrally located, and a nice place to try climbing with slightly older children.

Frederiks gate 2, 0164 Oslo

Here you can see the world's only preserved Viking helmet and real Egyptian mummies up close, along with artefacts from antiquity and the Middle Ages and a large coin collection. Everyone under 18 enters free.

Myrens verksted 3K, 0476 Oslo

Large climbing and bouldering hall of 2,400 sqm at Myrens Verksted, with walls up to 14 metres and its own bouldering section. There are courses for beginners and children.

Glassverkvegen 9, 3520 Jevnaker

The glass hut is the main reason to come: children stand behind a railing and watch glassblowers shape glowing glass right in front of them. Beyond that there is a playground, open workshops where children can make something themselves, and a small farm. Glassblowing runs Monday to Friday from ten to three, and the show is free. The site is large and flat, so prams are no problem. About an hour from Oslo by car.

Skedsmogata 23, 0655 Oslo

Organic children's farm two minutes from Ensjø metro station, run by volunteers. Free entry to sheep, donkeys, hens and other animals, with the farm open a few hours on Thursdays and Sundays in season.

Holmenkollveien 200, 0791 Oslo

The last stop on the Holmenkollen line and a starting point for trips into Nordmarka, with a view over Oslo, a café and easy walks straight into the forest. Free to be here; take the line all the way up.

Lush garden at Tøyen with thousands of plants, ponds, a fragrant systematic collection and plenty of room to wander and run. Bring a blanket and a picnic. The garden is free year round.

In the old tram hall from 1913, the family can get up close to historic trams and metro cars. Open Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday 11am-3pm all year (checked 24.10.2026).

Holmenkollen

Art installation and memorial about the resistance and the occupation of 1940 to 1945, on the hill above Frognerseteren and fifty metres from the metro station. Children can ask at the ticket desk for an activity map and a puzzle, and get a certificate afterwards. Most of it is outdoors.

Norway's largest improv theatre, with its own theatre bar and outdoor seating. Has regular Saturday shows for children at 1pm, both on the main stage and on the intimate stage. The children's shows are usually recommended from age 5-6. The programme changes through the season, so check what is playing and the recommended age.

A visitor farm with many different animals: deer, horses, ponies, sheep, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, pigs, chickens, peacocks, llamas, alpacas, donkeys and exotic birds. Note: located in Blaker (Aurskog-Høland/Fetsund area), about a 30-minute drive from Oslo.

The polar-ship museum at Bygdøy where children can board the Fram itself, the strongest wooden ship ever built, and explore three floors of polar history. There is also a new 4D simulator with a polar voyage.

In the 'Labben' workshop, creativity and your own ideas come first, and the museum writes that it is open to all visitors. The family offerings listed are the guided tour «Kunstdetektivene 2026» and «Drop in: Kunstsøndag» at Labben, but with no fixed times, so check the programme before you go. Children and young people under 18 enter free. Open Tuesday and Wednesday 11 to 17, Thursday 11 to 20 and Friday to Sunday 11 to 17, closed Monday (checked 24.10.2026). Note: located in Bærum, not Oslo municipality.

The City of Oslo's free visitor farm in Groruddalen, between Furuset and Lindeberg, with cows, calves, heifers, sheep, lambs, goats, kids, pigs, chickens, turkeys, geese and rabbits. Open to the public 11am-6pm on weekdays and 11am-3pm at weekends.

Bogstad Gård, Sørkedalen, Oslo

Organic, Debio-certified visitor farm by Bogstadvannet, run by the City of Oslo. The farm has cattle, horses, sheep, goats, rabbits, turkeys and hens, and the area around it is good for a walk and a picnic by the lake. Free entry. The visitor barn is open Tuesday to Friday 12-16 and the last Sunday of the month 11-16, but from mid-May to mid-October it is closed because the animals are out grazing around the farm. The farm has a minimum age of 3.

Vestlys plass 1, 0150 Oslo

Oslo's new main library by the Opera has a whole children's floor on the second level, with books, cushions, play nooks, workshops and a regular children's programme. Most things are free (paper and materials are charged at cost), and you can stay as long as you like, even a whole rainy day.

Flere steder i Oslo

Norwegian pop-up literature project with interactive theatre shows for children aged 0-11 (individual shows are often aimed at ages 3-9), built on familiar stories. Includes storytelling theatre, games tied to the story, workshops and a pop-up bookshop. Has staged shows such as Peter Pan, The Gruffalo and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. No fixed address; performs at various venues in Oslo, including Sentralen, Det Andre Teatret, Deichman Bjørvika and Tøyen (Vaterland/MiniØya).

Hyttegata 3, 3616 Kongsberg

A mine train 2.3 kilometres into the mountain, then 342 metres below ground in what was Norway's largest silver mine. The journey in is in open carriages and children are given helmets. It stays cool year-round, around six degrees, so bring a jumper even in July. The mine was worked for 335 years. About an hour and a half from Oslo.

The city museum in the old Frogner manor in the middle of Frognerparken tells Oslo's story across 1,000 years. Children and young people up to and including age 25 get in free, adults pay, and the first Thursday of every month is free for everyone. Inside there are models, old objects and changing exhibitions, and outside are the park and the playground.

Kistefossveien 112, 3520 Jevnaker

Sculpture park and industrial museum at Jevnaker, about an hour from Oslo. Children and young people from 0 to 19 enter free. There is an activity park by the cafe, a foam pit and a hamster wheel in the industrial museum, and Jeppe Hein's water labyrinth «Path of Silence», where children get wet.

Vollsveien 13H, 1366 Lysaker

Climbing centre with dedicated children's rooms for children aged 2-10: a room with auto-belay for harness climbing, and a bouldering room with rope-free climbing for the youngest. No booking or experience required. Also offers climbing groups for ages 7-9, 10-13 and 13-18, plus climbing camps during school holidays.

Tåsenveien 26, 0853 Oslo

A workshop at Tåsen where children and adults work with ceramics, glass, metal and jewellery design. It runs ceramics courses for children and family courses, and no experience is needed. Groups are kept small so everyone gets the help they need, and it suits a rainy day indoors.

Brynjulf Bulls plass 3, 0250 Oslo

In 'Urskogen Silva' in the lower floor, children can create their own insects in a tactile and digital workshop, and in the Fairy Tale Room small children can meet familiar storybook characters. The workshop suits everyone over the age of 3, and there is a family tour of Silva every Saturday at 12-1.30pm and 2.30-4pm. Children under two do not need a ticket, and children aged 2 to 17 enter free but must have a ticket.

Lundveien 3, 1900 Fetsund

An open-air museum and wetland centre where the Glomma meets Øyeren, about forty minutes from Oslo. Timber was floated and sorted here with booms until 1985, and the site stands as it was, with jetties, boats and buildings to walk between. Much of it is outdoors, with birdlife in the wetland.
