Handball for kids in Oslo

Dælenenga flerbrukshall, Grünerløkka

Handball in the Dælenenga multi-purpose hall, with teams for those born between 2020 and 2014. Grüner has run handball alongside football for years, and sessions are at the same site as the club's other activities.

ages 6-12

Grorud flerbrukshus, Grorud

Handball for the youngest in the district's large sports club, founded in 1918. Weekly training for six-, seven- and eight-year-olds, boys and girls together, at Grorud flerbrukshus. Through the season the group takes part in Loppetassen, the handball federation's tournaments for the youngest, where no league table is kept. You can try a couple of times before joining the club. Grorud Idrettslag also has football and tennis, so trying something else alongside is easy.

Nordstrand Arena, Nordstrand

The handball section at Bækkelagets Sportsklub is one of the city's biggest handball communities, with around 850 active members from the youngest up and home matches at Nordstrand Arena. The club takes in children from about age five, with play and ball skills before it gets serious. A broad programme where most children find a team that fits.

Løren skole og Lørenhallen, Grünerløkka

Handball in one of the Løren clubs, with its own handball school as the way in for the youngest. The handball school is for school years 1 and 2, handball-inspired play with a ball, Mondays from 17:00 to 18:00 at Løren school, starting Monday 7 September 2026. It costs 600 kroner per half year, and you can attend a few trial sessions before committing. The club takes new players on a rolling basis throughout the season, so arriving later is no problem. All you need is indoor shoes and clothes that are comfortable to move in. The handball school is parent-run, and the club says handball knowledge is not required to help out. The youngest take part in Loppetassen with four mini-cups through the school year, and the club has teams further up the age groups, including girls' teams at 15 and 16.

ages 6-16

Fjellhallen, Søndre Nordstrand

A parent-run handball group at Fjellhallen, with play-based sessions for the youngest born 2019 to 2021 teams up to the under-13s, and a girls' youth side for those born 2010 to 2013. The season runs from August to June. Your child can try a few sessions before joining, so it costs nothing to find out whether it suits.

Korsvollbanen, Nordre Aker

The handball section at Korsvoll IL has age-group teams from six to nineteen, plus senior sides. That is an unusually long span for a neighbourhood club: a six-year-old can start in year one and stay until finishing upper secondary.

ages 6-18

Haugerudhallen, Alna

The handball group has only children's teams, no seniors, for girls born between 2014 and 2017. The club describes itself as an inclusive and social group where enjoyment and mastery matter more than results.

ages 7-12

Bølerhallen, Østensjø

The handball section of Bøler IF has around seventeen teams and 350 players, with places for both girls and boys from the age of six. Training is spread across Bølerhallen, Oppsal Arena, Bjørnholthallen, Ulsrud upper secondary and Nøklevann school, so which hall a team uses depends on the age group. The club also runs a handball school in the autumn holidays.

ages 9-16

Linderudhallen, Bjerke

The handball section of Linderud IL, known as Linje 5, with teams for children and teenagers in the club's own halls at Linderud. The club runs its own tournament, the Linjecup, and has a dedicated page for families who find the training fee hard to manage. Linderud IL also runs adapted handball as a separate offering. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Årvoll, Bjerke

The handball group at Årvoll IL gives children and youth in the Bjerke district a local handball programme, with teams in several age groups. For the youngest it's about play and ball skills, and the club is an important meeting place in the neighbourhood around Årvoll.

The handball section at Ellingsrud IL has around 200 active players across thirteen teams for children, youth and seniors, and its own modern handball hall at Ellingsrudflaten. Owning the hall means more training slots than most district clubs get.

Handball at Monolitten IL, with teams for children by birth year and handball schools for the youngest, including during the winter break. The 2015 cohort is among the teams, that is children aged 11. Sessions are held at Majorstuen multi-purpose hall and Skøyenhallen.

Romsåshallen, Grorud

Handball at Romsåshallen, where all of the club's training takes place. The club's own group overview splits the children into a handball school for ages 5 to 9 and a junior group for 10 to 15, while its training schedule lists a handball school for girls aged 6 to 10 and a team for girls born 2012 to 2014, so check with the club which groups actually run now and whether there is one for boys. Romsås sports club was founded in 1972 and keeps the barrier to entry deliberately low. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Apalløkka idrettshall, Grorud

Handball club at Apalløkka sports hall in Ammerud, with teams for children aged six to twelve. Members come from Grorud, Rødtvet, Nordtvet and Ammerud, so you do not have to live in Ammerud to join. Beginners are welcome throughout the season and no previous handball experience is needed.

The handball group at Stovner Sportsklubb, with teams for girls and boys from primary school age at Stovnerhallen. The club is deliberately broad, so children can try several sports without changing club.

Kjelsås, Nordre Aker

Kjelsås has grown into one of Oslo's biggest handball communities, with teams for girls and boys in every age group up around Kjelsås and Grefsen. For the youngest it's about play, speed and ball contact, and the club has strong local roots in Nordre Aker.

Jordalhallen, Gamle Oslo

Handball club with teams for every age in Jordalhallen: children's teams from 6 to 12 and youth teams from 13 to 19, plus senior sides. The club's philosophy is that everyone who wants to should get to play handball, and it serves children and youth across Oslo. Njård is based at Njårdhallen by Makrellbekken and has a solid handball programme for children and youth on the west side. From the youngest ball-play groups to competitive teams - a club where many start early and stay for years.

The handball section of Oppsal IF, playing out of Oppsal Arena in Vetlandsveien. The handball school is the way in for children in years 1 and 2, and the club says it has teams for almost every age and year group above that, for both girls and boys. For younger children the club runs kindergarten handball at Oppsal Arena every other weekend, free and with no sign-up, where you simply turn up. New players can ask for a trial session before joining.

Lambertseter IF is the neighbourhood club at Lambertseter, with a broad handball programme for children and youth in local halls. The club emphasises that everyone should get to play, whatever their level, and is a natural meeting place for many families in the south of the city.
