Basketball for kids in Oslo

Fyrstikkalleen skole, Gamle Oslo

The basketball club within Vålerenga Idrettsforening, with teams for children and teenagers aged 8 to 17 and senior teams for both women and men. Training takes place in the sports hall at Fyrstikkalleen school at Helsfyr. Having senior teams means there is somewhere to go once a player ages out of the youth teams. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Apalløkka Idrettshall, Tjernveien 12, Grorud

A basketball club in the Groruddalen valley with its home court in Apalløkka sports hall, and one of the strongest basketball communities in Oslo. The club has teams in all age groups, runs its own basketball camps and has a new outdoor court at Grorud - so you can play indoors in winter and outside in summer. Basketball is an affordable team sport with a low barrier to entry.

Fjellhallen, Søndre Nordstrand

Basketball for children and youth in Storehallen at Fjellhallen, with teams for those born 2015-2016, for the 2014 cohort, and a youth team for those born before 2014. The club welcomes newcomers at all levels and is itself looking for more volunteer coaches for the children's teams. Basketball is strong in Søndre Nordstrand.

Tøyen Arena, Gamle Oslo

Basketball for children and youth, including miniskills sessions for the youngest. Tøyen Sportsklubb is a neighbourhood club in Gamle Oslo where membership costs 100 kroner for the whole calendar year, and that covers everything the club runs for your age group. Activities take place at Tøyen Arena and Gamle Munch, and the club also runs free holiday activities during school breaks.

The basketball group at Stovner Sportsklubb, in Stovnerhallen, with teams for children and youth. Basketball has been strong in Groruddalen for many years, and it is a sport that needs little equipment and is quick to get going with.

Oppsal, Østensjø

A volunteer-run basketball club at Oppsal with activities from EasyBasket for the youngest, through age-group teams, to youth and senior basketball. EasyBasket is a simplified version with lower hoops and fewer rules, letting small children play a real game. The club runs both grassroots and elite programmes. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

ages 6-18

Løkkeveien 15, Frogner

Basketball in a low-threshold club where the annual fee is 50 kroner and everyone is welcome. Girls and boys train together on Tuesdays from 17:00 to 18:30 in the school gym on Løkkeveien, and the coach splits the group by age and level. Sessions follow the school year and pause during school holidays.

Haugerudhallen, Alna

EasyBasket for the youngest in four groups from six to twelve, and league teams for boys and girls up to sixteen. Haugerudhallen is the home court, all teams train there, and matches are at weekends.

ages 6-18

Bøler, Østensjø

A basketball club at Bøler with teams for children and teenagers. The club states explicitly that it will go beyond the ordinary to include those who otherwise fall outside sport, and that it works actively against racism, bullying and harassment. That is worth noting, because it means something concrete for a child who has not settled into a club before. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Persbråten videregående skole, Vestre Aker

One of the oldest basketball clubs in Oslo and Akershus, founded on 28 April 1967, with its home court in Persbråtenhallen at Persbråten upper secondary school. Hovseterhallen was the home court until 2011, and the club still uses the old Pershallen and Holmen skole for training. Most mini and junior players attend the schools nearby - Hovseter, Huseby, Voksen and the Steiner school - so the team often becomes an extension of the school crowd. Mini-basket is the way in for the youngest.

Høybråten, Stovner

A local basketball club at Høybråten in the north-east of the city, with teams for children and youth. The club is one of several basketball communities in the Groruddalen valley, where basketball has been strong for many years - a sport that needs little equipment and where you get going quickly. A good entry point for children who want to play an indoor team sport.

ages 6-18

Ullern, Ullern

The basketball section of Ullern Idrettsforening, one of the large multi-sport clubs in the west of the city, which also covers football, handball, bandy and cheerleading. The basketball group has teams in the children's and youth classes, and the advantage of a multi-sport club is that children can easily try something else if basketball turns out not to be their thing.

Grünerløkka, Grünerløkka

Central Oslo's own basketball club, with roots back to 1987 and over 440 players from more than 50 nations - most of them under 19. Diversity and inclusion are at its core, and it's easy to get started. Basketball is a fast team sport that suits children who like pace and teamwork.
