Ice hockey and bandy for kids in Oslo

8 options are listed under ice hockey and bandy for children in Oslo, across 8 districts, for ages 4 to 18. Below is the full overview with age, district and a link to sign-up.

Districts with an offering: Alna, Bjerke, Frogner, Gamle Oslo, Grünerløkka, Nordre Aker, Sagene, Østensjø.

Ice hockey and bandy are the two team sports on ice, and they have completely different characters. Hockey is played indoors on a small rink with plenty of body contact, while bandy is played outdoors on a surface the size of a football pitch, with a stick and a small ball. Both start early: several clubs welcome children from four or five in skating school.

The way in is almost always via skating school, where children learn to stand and fall before they get a stick in hand. It is a good start even for families who simply want their children to feel safe on skates, without committing to a season of matches.

Worth knowing about the ice sports

Ask about loan equipment first. A child's hockey kit costs a lot new, and most clubs run an equipment store or swap day precisely because the threshold would otherwise be high. Bandy needs less: skates, a helmet and a stick.

Bandy depends on the weather. Natural ice and outdoor artificial rinks make for a shorter season than hockey's indoor hall, so ask the club what they do in mild winters.
