Organised activities for 5-year-olds in Oslo

At 5, the thing many have been waiting for arrives: team sports. Football clubs typically take in the age group the year before school starts, so for the first time the choice is between a team and everything else, dance, choir, multi-sport, skiing, martial arts and riding. This is the largest selection of the preschool ages in our catalogue.

Five is also the last year before school and the after-school programme (AKS) reorganise the whole week. An activity the child enjoys now tends to come along, and gives something familiar to hold on to when everything else becomes new in the autumn.

Worth knowing at age 5

Let the child choose, even if the choice is not football. The age group teams fill up fast and it can feel like a train leaving, but children start football at six, seven and eight without anyone noticing the difference.

Check the neighbourhood choirs and bands now: many take in beginners from the year before school starts, and music is among the most affordable regular activities in the city. We have a dedicated choir and band guide with age limits per group.

Rehearsals run on Wednesdays 17:30-18:30 (outside school holidays) in the lower floor of the Vestre Aker parish house, Ullevalsveien 117. Halfway through there is a break in the parents' room with juice for the children and coffee for the grown-ups, a short devotion, and then a little more singing. Gospel is easy to take in: simple melodies, plenty of rhythm, and songs the children remember after the first rehearsal.

A bouldering centre in Østerdalsgata at Ensjø with weekly groups for children and teenagers, split into four age levels: Brak Mini (5-7) on Mondays, Brak Junior (7-9) on Tuesdays and Brak Crew (10-13) on Wednesdays, all 16.00-17.30, plus Brak Youth (13-17) on Thursdays 15.30-17.00. Groups are capped at ten participants with 90 minutes of training a week, and climbing shoes are lent out if you need them. The youngest have their own dedicated area. Parents can come inside or wait in the cafe. The term runs from week 36 to week 51, September to December, and sign-up is through a form on their website. NOTE that the centre is new and has not opened yet - check their site for the opening date.

The choir is open to everyone - both children with Ukrainian backgrounds and children of other nationalities who want to sing together - and the repertoire is Ukrainian and international. The children develop in a warm and trusting atmosphere, and for the Ukrainian families the choir is a place where the connection to their own culture is kept alive. One of few choirs in the city that welcomes four-year-olds.

The youngest attend «blue tennis», a 45-minute preparatory class where an adult over sixteen takes part actively alongside the child, and where the exercises are as much about coordination, balance and ball control as about tennis. The club says the class suits five and six year olds best, but that three and four year olds are welcome to try too. From age six the tennis school follows the TennisKids model with colour levels: red tennis on a mini court with balls travelling at 25 per cent of normal speed, then orange tennis on a mid-size court with balls at 50 per cent. Court hire is included in the junior membership.

The termly fee is 3,000 kroner, and instruments can be rented for 400 kroner a term.

Tween Sing takes years 5 to 8 straight afterwards, and Sjibbolet Ten Sing is for everyone from year 8 and up, on Thursdays. Church choirs are traditionally among the most affordable and inclusive music offerings there are, and here children sing alongside peers from the neighbourhood.

Playful gymnastics is split into ages three to four and five to six, the gymnastics school into years one and two, three and four, and five to seven, and from year eight there is a separate group for teenagers. The club also has para gymnastics for both children and youth. The youngest are in the gym hall while the older ones train in the main hall. Gymnastics is the foundation for most other sports and builds strength, suppleness and body control.
