Wrestling and judo belong together because they do the same thing with the body: they are grip-based, they take place mostly on the ground or on the way there, and the very first thing children learn is how to fall without getting hurt. There are no strikes and no kicks, and for many parents that is exactly why the choice lands here.
In Oslo, wrestling is the more strongly represented of the two, with clubs based in ordinary sports halls around the city, while judo is concentrated in fewer places. Several of the wrestling clubs welcome children from as young as four, and the classes for the youngest look more like structured play on a mat than competitive sport.
Worth knowing about wrestling and judo
These are the martial arts with the closest physical contact, and some children find that uncomfortable the first few times. It usually passes once they know the others in the group, but it is worth knowing in advance if your child is one who needs a little distance.
Kit is rarely an obstacle here: clubs usually lend out suits for the first six months, and wrestling needs nothing but ordinary training clothes to begin with. Ask before you buy anything.
