A youth activity house at Mortensrud, in the white house in the garden on Helga Vaneks vei, run by the Red Cross for ages 13 to 25. Open Tuesday to Thursday 5pm-9pm, with homework help on Tuesday and Wednesday and a work-training programme. Free.

Lofsrudveien 22, Søndre Nordstrand

A free municipal activity offering for children and youth from 5th grade to 18 at Mortensrud, run by the borough. A safe meeting place with varied activities after school.

General Ruges vei 102, Østensjø

An activity house at Skullerud for young people from grade 8 up to and including age 18, with a varied programme through the week and a meeting place after school. Usually open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Østensjø is among the districts with most organised leisure offerings for children, and the activity house is what catches those who don't attend anything regular. Free entry and drop-in.

Torggata, Sentrum

A children's and juniors' organisation with six local chapters in Oslo, among them Juba Bjerke and Juba Bryn. Activities vary by chapter: theatre, singing, dance, crafts, outdoor life, weekend gatherings, summer camp and cultural workshops. Note that how often they meet varies too, from weekly to monthly, so it is worth asking what a particular chapter actually does before joining. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Sandstuveien 15, Nordstrand

Club for school years 4 to 7, Wednesdays from 19:00 to 20:30 in Sandstuveien. Dodgeball, games, board games, bonfire trips to Brannfjell and cinema nights; every session starts with a shared meal, and the children often help decide the programme. The fee is 50 kroner per term.

Plogveien 22, Østensjø

A youth club at Manglerud bad og aktivitetshus in Plogveien, for children and young people from year 5 to nineteen. The junior club runs Tuesday and Wednesday, the youth club Monday, Thursday and Friday. Østensjø is among the districts with most organised activities for children in the city, but most require registration and a fee - Klubb1 is the place you can come to without either. Free.

Rosenholmveien 11, Søndre Nordstrand

The borough's farm at Rosenholm with outdoor activities: a riding school for everyone over nine, pony-led rides for the youngest and therapy riding. A green offering where children care for animals and spend time outdoors.

Holmlia Senter vei 17, Søndre Nordstrand

A Deichman library only for children in grades 5 to 8, at Holmlia. No adults allowed in. Learn something new, play, cook and meet friends. Free.

Bogstadveien 76 A, Frogner

A Red Cross Fellesverk in Bogstadveien, open on the drop-in floor from the start of year 8 up to and including nineteen, while homework help and job training take people up to twenty-five. The Fellesverk centres differ from the municipal youth clubs in being volunteer-run and having clear practical content alongside the social side: homework help, job training and courses. Everything is free, and you don't need to register to drop by.

Maridalsveien 292, Nordre Aker

An open meeting place for young people in the Rachel Grepp house at Torshov, with no programme and no registration. It is deliberately informal: the point is having somewhere to be, not taking part in an organised activity. Free, and staffed by adults who are there if anyone needs them.

Veitvetveien 8, Bjerke

A municipal contemporary-circus programme for young people at Veitvet, with acrobatics, juggling and aerial work on rope and silks. Contemporary circus differs from traditional circus in being circus technique without animals, focused on movement, expression and ensemble work - closer to dance and gymnastics than to the ring. There are few such offerings in Norway, and this one is free and drop-in.

Holmlia senter, Søndre Nordstrand

A cultural venue at Holmlia shopping centre putting on events for children and young people in the Søndre Nordstrand district, across different art forms. It is designed as a meeting place where you can come to watch something and stay to take part. Event tickets can be paid for with the leisure card. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Lakkegata 79 C, Grünerløkka

A free activity centre in Lakkegata with a junior club for ages 9-14 and a youth club from year 8 to age 17. Dragen has more regular activities than most clubs: swimming, arts and crafts, music, gaming, homework help and climbing - and food is served every day, vegetarian. Food on the premises means in practice that children stay longer and that the threshold for coming is lower.

Poppelstien 6, Nordstrand

A youth club in Poppelstien in Nordstrand, for children and young people from ten to eighteen. The club takes its informal name from the neighbourhood, and is one of three municipal clubs in the district. Free, and the programme is shaped together with the young people who use it.

Lørenveien 2, Grünerløkka

A culture house for young people at Sinsen, one of the largest of its kind in Oslo, with stages, rehearsal rooms and workshops. The house is run with and for young people: those who use it also help decide what happens there. That is a meaningful difference from a programme planned by adults, and one reason such houses keep young people longer. The programme is split into a junior offering for years 4-7 and a youth offering from year 8 up, covering ages 9 to 25 in all. Free.

Enebakkveien 264, Østensjø

A youth club in Enebakkveien at Abildsø, for children aged ten to twelve. The narrow age range is the point: this is a junior club only, so middle-primary children don't have to share the room with teenagers, which means more of the youngest actually dare to go. It is free, and you simply turn up - no registration, no membership fee.

Frysja 33, Nordre Aker

Disco adapted for youth with intellectual disabilities, every Thursday from 18:30 to 20:30 at Frysja 33 near Kjelsås. Food and drinks are sold, the dance floor gets heavy use, and 70 to 90 participants usually turn up. Run by the charitable organisation Civitan, following Oslo's school holidays.

A youth club in Pilestredet, for young people from thirteen to eighteen. The house sits close to both Bislett and the student quarter, in a part of the city where young people otherwise have few free indoor meeting places that don't require buying something. Free and drop-in.

Kolstadgata 1, Gamle Oslo

A free youth club in the basement of the K1 activity house at Tøyen, for children and young people between ten and fourteen. The club is open Monday to Sunday all year - seven days a week is unusual even for a municipal club - with adults present throughout. Tøyen has one of the city's youngest populations, and an offering that is open at weekends too matters a great deal there.

Ris menighetshus, Vestre Aker

Free club for school years 5 to 7 at the Ris parish house, Fridays from 14:30 to 16:30, right after school. The weekend kicks off with crafts, cooking, games and time to hang out with old and new friends. The club is part of the YWCA-YMCA.

Strømsveien 4 H, Gamle Oslo

A youth club in Strømsveien by Jordal, for young people from thirteen to seventeen. It sits in one of the fastest-changing areas of Oslo, with a new sports facility and a lot of construction, and is among the fixed points that have stayed put through it. Free and drop-in.

Tokeruddalen 105, Stovner

The Rockefabrikk at Stovner gives young people rehearsal rooms, instruments and recording equipment at no cost. Groruddalen has a long tradition of music scenes that grew from the ground up, and municipal rehearsal space is a precondition for that continuing: without it, bands disappear before they become anything. Free and drop-in.

Snipemyrveien 2, Søndre Nordstrand

A social gathering place for children and young people from 5th grade to age 18, run by the borough. The junior club for years 5-7 meets at Bjørndal on Thursdays 6-9pm, while the youth club for year 8 and up meets on Fridays 6.30-11pm at Mortensrud Aktivitetshus. Free and drop-in.

Flere møtesteder i Oslo, St. Hanshaugen

A free meeting place for primary-school-age children, run by Red Cross volunteers. Each group meets at a fixed venue once a week, from 5pm to 7pm, for a couple of hours, doing everything from forest walks and campfires to baking, board games, drawing, bowling, climbing and cinema trips. The Oslo groups are based at Romsås library, Gamlebyen school, Torshovdalen activity house, Gulestua in Tante Ulrikkes vei, Sletteløkka community house, Sinsen school and Bjørndal school. Registration is by email to Oslo Red Cross or through the form on their website.

Vetlandsveien 99, Østensjø

A youth club in Vetlandsveien at Oppsal, for young people from thirteen to eighteen. It is a pure youth club with no junior section, which gives the oldest somewhere that is theirs - one reason young people stay in the club system longer here than in many places. Free and drop-in.

ages 13-18

Sponhoggveien 2, Ullern

A youth house at Lilleaker in the Ullern district, for young people aged 13 to 19, with its own junior club for school years 5 to 7 on Mondays from 6pm to 8.30pm. Stoppestedet is a culture house more than a youth club: the emphasis is on concerts, workshops and what the young people put on themselves. On Thursdays it runs Krølles kro, a separate offering for young people from 15 with disabilities. Ullern has few such houses, so it draws young people from across the district. Free.

A youth club in Tvetenveien at Trosterud, for children and young people from ten to eighteen. It is one of three municipal clubs in Alna, the most populous district in Oslo, and covers the neighbourhoods around Trosterud and Haugerud. Free and drop-in.

Vestlisvingen 188, Stovner

A youth club in Vestlisvingen at Vestli, with a junior programme for school years 4-7 and a youth programme for ages 13-18. Vestli sits at the very end of the metro line, further from the centre than any other Oslo housing estate, and that makes local provision more important here than almost anywhere else in the city. Free and drop-in.

Veitvetveien 8, Bjerke

A drug-free activity centre in Veitvetveien, for children and young people aged ten to seventeen, with a junior club for years 4 to 7 and a youth club for years 8 to 10 on separate days. It shares an address with both the Red Cross family centre and the contemporary-circus programme at Veitvet, so three different offerings for children sit in the same building - one of the densest concentrations of children's provision at a single address in Oslo. Free.

Tusentrippen 5, St. Hanshaugen

An activity park and youth club at Marienlyst, known as Leker'n, with both outdoor facilities and an indoor club. Park and club belonging together means you can play outside until it gets dark or cold and carry on indoors, which in practice extends the season considerably in a city where outdoor facilities stand unused five months a year. The after-school offering is for pupils in years 5 to 7 in the St. Hanshaugen district and requires registration. The junior club on Monday and Wednesday evenings is for years 5 to 7 and open to all. Pupils in years 8 to 10 with special needs can also get an after-school place. Free.

Ammerudhellinga 47, Grorud

A youth club in Ammerudhellinga, open across the full span from ten to eighteen. Ammerud is one of the areas in Groruddalen with the densest blocks of flats and least indoor room at home, so the club is where many children can actually meet friends without standing outdoors in all weathers. Free and drop-in.

Stoppestedet ungdomshus, Sponhoggveien 2, Ullern

A dedicated Thursday programme for young people from age 15 with reduced functional ability, in the premises of Stoppestedet youth house. Krølles kro is an adapted meeting place where teenagers can hang out, play games and be social in a safe setting with adults present - a rare and important part of the city's youth club provision.

Gamlebyen, Gamle Oslo

An activity park and leisure offering in Gamlebyen, with sport and activities for children and young people in one of the city's most densely populated districts. It combines organised activity with open drop-in meeting points, and is centrally located for families in Gamle Oslo. Free to use.

Veitvetveien 8, Bjerke

A municipal sound studio for young people at Veitvet, with recording equipment, microphones and software in place. Here you can record your own music, learn mixing and production, or just try it out without owning any of the gear. Studio equipment is expensive, and for most young people a municipal studio is the only realistic way into music production. Free and drop-in.

Midtoddveien 12, Nordre Aker

A culture and youth house in the old tram depot at Kjelsås, where the building itself is part of the offering: large rooms with a ceiling height few other youth houses have. There are concerts, workshops and activities, and young people help run the place. Free and drop-in.

A youth club in Munkedamsveien at Ruseløkka, for children and young people from ten to eighteen. It sits in one of the central areas where surprisingly many children live, close to Aker Brygge and Vika, and is one of few free offerings in a district where most things cost money. No registration.

Ekebergveien 243, Nordstrand

A youth club at Ekebergveien 243 in Nordstrand, for children and young people from eleven to eighteen. The club takes its name from the house number, which says something about how rooted in the neighbourhood it is. Nordstrand has long distances and scattered housing, so a club in the middle of the residential area is worth more than a bigger one downtown. Free and drop-in.

Tvetenveien 101, Alna

A youth club behind the hut at Tveten farm in Tvetenveien, split into a junior club for years 5 to 7 and a youth club for years 8 to 10. The junior club has group activities on Tuesday and an outdoor club on Thursday, plus its own Friday opening for year 7; the youth club has a girls' club on Wednesday and an open evening on Friday. Free.

Harald Sohlbergs vei 7, Alna

A youth club in Harald Sohlbergs vei at Ellingsrud, for children and young people from ten to eighteen. Ellingsrud lies at the eastern edge of the city, up against the forest, and is a long way from the big youth houses in the centre - so the club is the neighbourhood's own offering in a practical sense, not just in name. Free and drop-in.

Berglyveien 2 C, Søndre Nordstrand

The district's youth club in Prinsdal, known as Låven, for children and young people from year 5 to age 18. Youth clubs are drop-in: no registration and no expectation that you come every time. Annual membership costs 50 kroner, and without membership juniors pay 5 kroner a time and youth 10 kroner on Fridays, while Wednesdays are free. That low threshold is exactly the point - somewhere to be after school that doesn't require a parent to sign you up or pay for a season.

Lindebergåsen 10, Alna

A youth club in Lindebergåsen, with a junior club for grades 4 to 7 and a youth club from grade 8 up to eighteen. Alna is the most populous district in Oslo, and the clubs here each cover large neighbourhoods - Lindeberg is one of them. Everyone can use the club free of charge, and you turn up without having signed up for anything.

Trygve Lies plass 1, Alna

A library and activity house in one at Furuset, where the reading room, workshops and meeting place sit under the same roof. The combination is unusual and practical: children who come to borrow books discover the activities, and the other way round. It is free, and the library is open beyond youth club hours.

Bård Skolemesters vei 1, Bjerke

The district's alcohol- and drug-free youth club at Bjerke, for children and young people in years 5 to 10, open every Wednesday from 2pm to 6pm. Bjerke has few regular leisure offerings for children outside sport, so the club is one of the district's most important meeting places for those who don't do organised sport. Free, with no registration and no commitment.

Berglyveien 2 C, Søndre Nordstrand

The Thursday Club at Låven in Berglyveien in Prinsdal is Lerdal youth club's adapted evening for children and young people with disabilities, with video games, simulated racing and other entertainment alongside safe, qualified adults. Thursdays, juniors from 17:00 to 19:00 and youth from 19:30 to 21:30. Taking part is free, but unlike the regular club nights you need to sign up by email or phone, so everyone who comes gets a good experience. The kiosk sells snacks and soft drinks for cash or card, and any meals served, with prices, are explained when you sign up. The club encourages participants who need continuous one-to-one support to bring a support worker, parent or other responsible adult, for instance for toilet visits and meals.

Bogstadveien 76, Frogner

A youth club in Bogstadveien, split in two: junior for school years 5 to 7 and youth for years 7 to 10. On Saturdays it is open for young people from year 8 through upper secondary, and from Monday to Wednesday free food is served at the junior session straight after school. Frogner is the Oslo district with the highest share of children already enrolled in something organised, and the club is there for those who aren't - or who need somewhere to be as well. Free, with no registration and no requirement to take part in anything in particular.

Solskinnsveien 12, Vestre Aker

Free girls' group for year 8 students, Wednesdays from 17:00 to 19:00. A fixed group of 10 to 12 girls meets weekly with two adult group leaders, aiming to strengthen confidence and self-esteem through good conversations, friendship and fun activities, in a safe and inclusive space free of pressure to perform.

Ravnkollbakken 71, Grorud

A youth club in Ravnkollbakken at Romsås, for children and young people from ten to eighteen. Romsås was built as a car-free housing estate where everything is within walking distance, and the club is one of the institutions in that structure - children get there on foot whatever their age. Free and drop-in.

Hausmanns gate 23, Grünerløkka

Free activity house for teenagers, run by Oslo Red Cross, open Monday to Thursday from 15:00 to 21:00. Fellesverket is a drop-in offering with many different activities, homework help and a place to hang out after school, and during school holidays there are activities both in the house and on outings. Oslo Red Cross runs four such houses: Sentrum, Grorud, Mortensrud and Majorstua.

General Ruges vei 102, Østensjø

A municipal gaming centre at Rustad, for young people from year 8 up to and including eighteen who belong to the Østensjø district. There is also a separate offering for those in years 5 to 7, with much the same set-up, except that the youngest cannot play all the games the teenagers can. The equipment is provided, so you don't need your own PC or console to take part. The centre is as much a meeting place as a games room: you play alongside others rather than alone at home, with adults present. Free. For families where gaming otherwise happens behind a closed door, this is one of few places it becomes a social activity.

A youth activity house at Holmlia with many activities, for ages thirteen and up. A collaboration between the YMCA-YWCA, the Church City Mission, Unge Holmlianere and the borough.

Torshovdalen, Sagene

An activity house in Torshovdalen, on the edge of the park, for children and young people in the neighbourhood. Sitting in a park means indoors and outdoors connect: much of the activity happens outside when the weather allows. The house is free and needs no registration.

Stoppestedet ungdomshus, Vestre Aker

The junior programme at Stoppestedet youth house, for those too young for the regular youth club. While the main house welcomes teenagers from 13 to 19, Junior’n is the setting for the middle grades - safe evenings with games, activities and adults present. Free, like the rest of the city's youth clubs.

Ensjøveien 23, Gamle Oslo

Youth club for ages 13 to 19 at Ensjø, Thursdays from 19:00 to 22:00. A place to hang out, relax and meet good people in a safe community where you can be yourself, run by the Salvation Army. The fee is 50 kroner.

Lovisenberggata 4, St. Hanshaugen

Free after-school club for school years 5 to 7, Wednesdays from 14:00 to 16:30 at Lovisenberggata 4, run by the St. Hanshaugen parish. Hang out with friends or make new ones, chat, play games and join various activities. No registration needed, just come. Follows the school year.

An after-school offering at Bøler church for years five to seven. The age group between children's clubs and youth clubs has few options, and this is one of them in the district.

Maridalsveien 3, Grünerløkka

A youth culture house at Grünerløkka with concerts, rehearsal rooms, workshops and a stage young people get to use themselves. X-RAY has been a fixture in Oslo's youth culture for decades, and is among the houses where the step from audience to performer is shortest. Free and drop-in.

Torshovgata 33, Sagene

A media workshop for young people aged 13 to 20 making film, podcasts, photography and content for the web, with equipment and guidance. Where the city's other music and media offerings centre on sound, the emphasis here is visual and editorial. Young people who want to learn to edit film or make a podcast find cameras, microphones and someone who can show them how. Free.

Åsbråten, Holmlia, Søndre Nordstrand

The children's and youth centre at Åsbråten in Holmlia, a youth club with many different activities for children and young people up to age twenty. Founded in 1984, owned by six housing cooperatives, USBL and OBOS, and supported by the borough.

Arendalsgata, Sagene

A voluntary organisation in the Sagene district running a cultural and activity centre for children and young people. It offers leisure activities, sport, cultural gatherings, social meeting places and trips for members. This is the kind of meeting place that is rarely easy to find online, and that usually reaches people through someone they know. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Bjølsengata 12, Sagene

A youth club in Bjølsengata at Sagene, for children and young people from ten to eighteen. Sagene is the most densely populated district in Norway, with little room either outdoors or in, and UngMetro is one of few places where young people can be indoors without paying for it. Free and drop-in.
