Organised activities for 6-year-olds in Oslo

Six is the big shift in the catalogue. More activities open at this age than at all four previous ages combined, and the reason is simple: a great many clubs set the threshold at school age rather than at a particular birthday.

Three groups dominate what arrives. Music is the largest, with choirs and bands in almost every district. Team sports open properly, football first. And scouting takes children from first grade, with groups across the city. Chess and the first coding clubs also appear, entirely new genres.

Worth knowing at age 6

The first year of school is long enough on its own. One regular activity a week is plenty, and many families wait until after the autumn break before starting anything. Most activities take new members all year.

Choirs and bands are among the cheapest regular activities in the city, and most lend out an instrument. If cost matters, they are worth looking at before the more expensive sports, and it is worth checking whether your district has a support scheme.

Football and alpine skiing are also on offer at the club, but with separate sign-up. Sporting joy without a big apparatus.

Beginners are helped to get started, and the club has hosted both the Norwegian and the Nordic championships. The site is shared with Osloungdommens Motorsenter.

41. Oslo Ullevål was founded on 19 November 1928, and its first scout house at Vestgrensa - an old German barracks - was inaugurated in 1948. When the boys' and girls' troops at Ullevål merged in 1984 they took the name Longship Group. The group has a canoe tradition going back ninety years, with trips through Nordmarka, making it one of the city's scout groups with the longest unbroken identity of its own.

The vandrere take on gradually more responsibility, and at lower-secondary level leadership training is central.

Landbrukskvartalet is a neighbourhood project with workshops and shared spaces, so the coding club sits inside a bigger community of activities in the building.

Nordstrand has both the Norwegian Scout Association and KFUK-KFUM represented, so there are two scouting traditions to choose between in the district. Age groups follow the school years: stifinnere in years 3 and 4, vandrere from year 5 to 10, and rovers from the first year of upper secondary. The Christian foundation is explicit, but the groups welcome everyone.

Each group meets at a fixed venue once a week, from 5pm to 7pm, for a couple of hours, doing everything from forest walks and campfires to baking, board games, drawing, bowling, climbing and cinema trips. The Oslo groups are based at Romsås library, Gamlebyen school, Torshovdalen activity house, Gulestua in Tante Ulrikkes vei, Sletteløkka community house, Sinsen school and Bjørndal school.
