Organised activities for 17-year-olds in Oslo

Seventeen has the narrowest selection since primary school, and for the first time music is not the largest group: the youth clubs are. They take members well into the teens, cost nothing and require no sign-up, and that is precisely why they remain when much else has an upper limit.

Scouting, music and team sports still hold a lot, but the role is different from before. At seventeen you are often the oldest in the group, and most organisations have something built for exactly that: rover units, responsibility for beginners, assistant coaching or a seat on the board.

Worth knowing at age 17

Positions of responsibility and coaching roles count on a CV and come with a reference, and many clubs are happy to write one. It is worth asking for it while you are still there, not six months after you have left.

Most activities here have no upper limit, or run to eighteen. If a teenager is in something that ends at eighteen, it is worth finding out now what the next step in the same organisation is, rather than discovering that it simply stopped.

Historically aimed at developmental disabilities, it added wheelchair handball for people with mobility impairments in 2023, and a dedicated training group for children on the autism spectrum in 2024.

Beginners are helped to get started, and the club has hosted both the Norwegian and the Nordic championships. The site is shared with Osloungdommens Motorsenter.

41. Oslo Ullevål was founded on 19 November 1928, and its first scout house at Vestgrensa - an old German barracks - was inaugurated in 1948. When the boys' and girls' troops at Ullevål merged in 1984 they took the name Longship Group. The group has a canoe tradition going back ninety years, with trips through Nordmarka, making it one of the city's scout groups with the longest unbroken identity of its own.

The programme is split into a junior offering for years 4-7 and a youth offering from year 8 up, covering ages 9 to 25 in all. Free.

The point of an indoor hall is mundane but decisive in Oslo: you can skate right through the winter, when the outdoor parks lie under snow and ice for half the year. It is free and needs no registration - you just turn up. Stovner has few indoor meeting places for young people, so the hall fills a real gap in the district.

POPrommet is a private music school that also teaches singing, instruments and songwriting, so singers can add individual lessons alongside the choir.

The vandrere take on gradually more responsibility, and at lower-secondary level leadership training is central.

Nordstrand has both the Norwegian Scout Association and KFUK-KFUM represented, so there are two scouting traditions to choose between in the district. Age groups follow the school years: stifinnere in years 3 and 4, vandrere from year 5 to 10, and rovers from the first year of upper secondary. The Christian foundation is explicit, but the groups welcome everyone.
