Birth preparation courses in Oslo

Birth preparation courses range from the city's free digital offerings to private weekend courses with a midwife. The private ones cost, but give more time for questions and usually include your partner. Book well ahead: the courses are designed for the second half of pregnancy, and they fill up.

The course covers mental preparation, the stages of labour, pain relief, when to contact the hospital and the partner's role, plus practical preparations such as perineal massage and packing the hospital bag. The centre also runs courses in rooms at Ullevål hospital. After a period of digital webinars, the courses are back as in-person gatherings in smaller groups. A one-day birth preparation course at Ullevål patient hotel, arranged by their partner Kursjordmødrene. The course runs on a weekday from 4:30pm to 8pm, and is recommended between weeks 30 and 36 of pregnancy. Nine topics are covered, among them mental and physical preparation for birth, the stages of labour, pain relief, relaxation, the partner's role, the postnatal hospital stay and breastfeeding.

An evening course at Rikshospitalet run by four midwives, covering the last part of pregnancy, the birth itself and the postnatal period. The course lasts three and a half hours, from 4.30pm to 8pm, and is held in seminar room 3 in B1 (door 1017). Several dates are scheduled through each half-year. The course is open to everyone regardless of where you plan to give birth, and one ticket covers both the pregnant person and a support partner.

A midwife practice on Holtegata running birth preparation courses in small groups of up to five couples, with a physiological approach to birth. The course costs 3000 kroner per couple, and they also run a separate hypnobirthing course at 3500 kroner per couple. The practice additionally offers antenatal check-ups, pregnancy yoga, acupuncture, doula services, home birth, breastfeeding guidance and postnatal check-ups. Courses are held in both Norwegian and English.
