A dance school by Carl Berner with one of the largest course selections in Oslo, grouped by age. The main base is Vulkan sports hall, with further activities at Ensjø and Helsfyr. The mix of fixed courses and open sessions is unusual and keeps the threshold for trying it low. The club runs both grassroots and competitive programmes, and its athletes compete at national and international championships. The coaches are professionals. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Rodeløkka, Grünerløkka

Courses in creative dance for children, based at Rodeløkka with three age groups: 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 12. Each course runs for ten weeks, during which the children make their own performance. Teaching starts from the children's own ways of moving rather than a set repertoire, so no previous dance experience is needed. There are usually three teachers on the course, and the offering is open regardless of ability. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Sentralen, Øvre Slottsgate 3, Sentrum

Free dance workshops for teenagers and young adults aged 15 to 23, every Sunday from 13:30 to 15:30 in the gym hall at Sentralen. Every session includes a salsa workshop, varied with reggaeton, rueda, Afro-Cuban and other Latin rhythms. No experience needed.

Operahuset, Gamle Oslo

The National Ballet's own school, offering foundation training in classical ballet from ages 6 to 16. This is not a local beginners' class: pupils are admitted through annual auditions, and the aim is partly to feed talent into the National Ballet and fill children's roles in the company's productions. The final three years are run together with Ruseløkka school in a combined school-and-ballet programme, the only one of its kind in Norway, drawing applicants from across the country. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

Oslo municipal arts school's own dance groups for children, taught at culture stations around the city. As a municipal offering the price sits well below the private dance schools, and children and young people up to 18 living in Oslo are prioritised in admissions. Applications go through the municipality's shared portal, and you can apply year-round.

Folkets Hus Abildsø, Smedbergveien 5, Østensjø

A dance studio established in 2017, with courses for children and young people at Folkets Hus Abildsø. The studio has expanded its programme and now has, among other things, a dedicated course for 4- and 5-year-olds and hip hop for years 3-5. Teaching runs over two semesters a year. One of few dedicated dance offerings in the east of the city - most dance schools sit in the west and centre.

Romsås, Grorud

The dance group at Romsås sports club, started in the autumn of 2022, with modern hip hop as its genre. For the youngest ages the point is children's dance and play, and the instructors have taken courses in teaching dance to small children; the older ones get choreography meant to push them a little past what they already know. The training fee covers the 6 to 14 age group. The group takes part in a free dance school in the autumn, dance shows at the local schools and at the gymnastics end-of-term show. The club's own pages do not state a venue or training times for dance, so that has to be settled with the club. Approved for the Oslo leisure card.

A dance school and academy centrally in Oslo with a broad course programme for children and youth from around three to eighteen. In addition to classical ballet there's theatre, breakdance, funk jazz, modern and musical dance, so children can try many styles. A serious environment with clear progression for those who want to commit.

Tøyen Arena, Gamle Oslo

Dance for children and youth, with zumba and hip hop. Tøyen Sportsklubb is a neighbourhood club in Gamle Oslo where membership costs 100 kroner for the whole calendar year, and that covers everything the club runs for your age group. Activities take place at Tøyen Arena and Gamle Munch, and the club also runs free holiday activities during school breaks.

Skøyen kirke, Ullern

A dance studio that holds its classes in the parish hall at Skøyen church rather than at the office address it is registered under. Jazz, hip hop and show dance in age-based groups, from the youngest dancing half an hour at a time to longer sessions for teenagers. Each term ends with a performance. Free and open dance practice at Sentralen every Sunday from 16:00 to 19:00. Soul Sessions Open Practice welcomes all styles, levels and ages: dance freely, improvise, create choreography or drill steps and tricks, with hip-hop and street styles at its core. No registration, just show up.

Holmliahallen, Søndre Nordstrand

A dance programme with seventeen courses in break, hip hop, jazz and ballet, split three ways: separate groups for the youngest from age four to school start, for school years 1-6, and for youth from year 7 upwards. Experienced dancers can apply to the Dance Company. The studio is on the first floor of Holmliahallen with its own entrance marked DANS and a waiting room for parents.
