Organised activities for 14-year-olds in Oslo

Fourteen is the year the music offering nearly halves. The reason is concrete: junior choirs have their upper limit here, and they made up a large part of the music group in the catalogue. What remains is bands, orchestras and the culture school, which take members well into the teens.

Almost nothing new opens this year. The youth clubs and scouting hold steady and are now the two largest offerings alongside music, and they share the trait of taking members all the way to adulthood without having to start over.

Worth knowing at age 14

If a teenager sang in a choir and has aged out, there are youth and adult choirs that take members from around this age. It is a transition that often stalls simply because nobody mentions that it exists.

Scouting is worth another look here, including for those who quit at ten or eleven. The content is different for teenagers, with longer trips and more responsibility of their own, and groups take people back without requiring that they stayed all along.

Historically aimed at developmental disabilities, it added wheelchair handball for people with mobility impairments in 2023, and a dedicated training group for children on the autism spectrum in 2024.

The group carries the number 1 in its name, meaning it is among the oldest registered in the city - numbering in the Norwegian Scout Association follows the order of founding within the district. Scouting is outdoor life put into a system: hikes, campfires, cooking outdoors, map and compass and first aid, with separate sections by age: a pack for ages 8-10 and a troop for ages 10-16, both on Thursdays.

Beginners are helped to get started, and the club has hosted both the Norwegian and the Nordic championships. The site is shared with Osloungdommens Motorsenter.

41. Oslo Ullevål was founded on 19 November 1928, and its first scout house at Vestgrensa - an old German barracks - was inaugurated in 1948. When the boys' and girls' troops at Ullevål merged in 1984 they took the name Longship Group. The group has a canoe tradition going back ninety years, with trips through Nordmarka, making it one of the city's scout groups with the longest unbroken identity of its own.

A genuine niche sport with Olympic ancestry.

The club trains at several of the city's climbing centres, among them Oslo Klatresenter in Skullerud, Vulkan and Klatreverket, but is something other than the centres: here you are a member of a club community with regular training and the option to compete, not just a course participant. The point of an indoor hall is mundane but decisive in Oslo: you can skate right through the winter, when the outdoor parks lie under snow and ice for half the year. It is free and needs no registration - you just turn up. Stovner has few indoor meeting places for young people, so the hall fills a real gap in the district.

Age groups follow the school years: stifinnere in years 3 and 4, vandrere from year 5 to 10, and rovers from the first year of upper secondary. The Christian foundation is explicit, but the groups welcome everyone.
