Ice rinks in Oslo: 35 places to skate for free
Oslo lays ice at 32 locations every winter, on top of the three big artificial rinks. Almost all of it is free, and most of the rinks sit in a park or sports ground in the neighbourhood.
Natural ice is weather
The city lays and maintains the natural rinks from around 1 November to 1 March or 1 April. But whether there actually is ice on a given day depends on the cold — the season is a frame, not opening hours. After a thaw a rink can be unusable even in mid-January. The artificial rinks below work regardless.

Spikersuppa
In the city centre, between the Parliament and the National Theatre
Free and open to everyone. Skates can be hired for 200 kroner at the stand next to it. The easiest one to manage without planning, since you end up there anyway.
Frogner stadion
By Frogner Park
A historic stadium that has hosted several world championships going back to the early 1900s. A large ice surface, and easy to combine with a walk in the park.
Valle Hovin stadion
Valle Hovin
Reopened in 2024 after a full refurbishment, with 10,690 m² of ice: a 400-metre speed skating oval with a bandy rink inside it. Free and open to the public most of the time.
