Kindergarten packed lunches: ideas that actually get eaten

Before you buy anything

Ask the kindergarten first. Many kindergartens in Oslo serve all meals and don't want a packed lunch at all; others only on some days, or only for outings. That settles the whole question, and it is usually in the information you get when you start.

What works

Cut up the vegetables

This is not about taste, it is about accessibility. The Directorate of Health points out that availability is one of the most important factors in getting children to eat more vegetables and fruit, and that cutting them up increases intake. A whole carrot stays in the box; sticks get eaten.

Wholegrain bread, but not only bread

Wholegrain is the recommendation, but a packed lunch doesn't have to be two slices every day. Leftovers from dinner, a pasta salad or boiled potatoes work just as well, and break the routine that makes food come home uneaten.

One new thing at a time

The lunchbox is not the place to introduce three unknown things at once. Put the new thing next to something your child already eats. Then it gets tasted rather than rejected, and you find out whether it worked.

Expect it to be eaten fast

The meal at kindergarten is shorter than at home, and there are other children to watch. Anything that has to be peeled, picked apart or assembled won't get eaten. Ready-portioned wins every time.

Check the allergy rules on your child's floor

Many groups are nut-free, and some have other restrictions because of a specific child. These are not general rules — they apply to your child's group, and they can change when new children arrive.

Outing days need a different lunchbox

On an outing the food sits in a backpack for hours, often without cooling, and is eaten outdoors with cold fingers. It is worth choosing something that keeps, and that can be eaten with mittens on. The kindergarten tells you in advance which days these are.
